Hello. When you download the PocketEarth app, it includes only the app software. In the app, you must be connected to the internet the first time to download the required data, and then to download the maps for the area you would like to have offline. For example, within the app, you can select and download all the maps of Japan, or just the cities or regions you want. The maps downloads in PocketEarth are 2x or 3x smaller than our competitors, and as much as 100x smaller than traditional mapping apps, but can still be a relatively large download for large countries, and thus is not possible to include in the initial app download itself.
A WiFi access at a hotel or internet cafe could provide the internet connection so that you can start using our app. Alternately, if you have internet on your laptop via ethernet wire, then you can broadcast WiFi from the laptop to your iPod.
