@Ozgeo:  Wow, 9.0Gb, you must have almost the entire planet downloaded!

@tanuki:  Sorry to hear this! We are not sure what could have happened. The iOS 7 downloads themselves are almost 1GB each, so if you got iOS 7 and then the 2 minor updates (7.0.1 & 7.0.2) then this might account for some of your data usage.

PocketEarth marks the map files in a special way such that iOS should never delete them. On all of our test devices we have never seen this issue and updates to both the app and iOS has preserved the maps data correctly.
Normally for an automatic in-app data update, it checks automatically but still prompts the user if they want to update and this prompt tells you the download size.
My best guess at the moment is that there could be an obscure bug which allows an in-app data update to proceed without prompting first. One report from another user has suggested this.  And the first stage of the update indeed deletes all data first before downloading the new data (this is done because the data can be quite large and the space may not be available on the device otherwise).  My recommendation would be to change PocketEarth’s Network Mode setting to Offline after you have downloaded all desired maps. This would prevent any automatic updating. If you still find the maps disappear, please let us know.  We are looking into this potential bug and will correct it in the next update if we manage to track it down.
It has also come to our attention recently that there is an issue with ISPs and WiFi points which redirect you to a special login, status, or legal page when first connecting. In this case, if you have not opened Safari and proceeded through this initial process, then this system hijacks the network requests made from PocketEarth and we don’t have a robust enough way to determine this at the moment. When this happens, PocketEarth may appear to download maps data correctly, but then later when you try to view it, it will detect it is corrupted, delete it, and attempt to download it again. At least in this case the bad downloads should not use very much bandwidth  This will take some time to fix, but we will correct it in our next major release.  I am not sure if this could be related to what you are seeing.
iCloud and iTunes backups do not include the map data in PocketEarth. It is too large – Apple does not allow it to be included.
Very sorry for the inconvenience and expense.

Yes, this was caused by the last hot-fix update v1.6.2.  Unfortunately we had to make some pretty big changes quickly to fix some critical iOS 7 and iPhone 5s issues, and didn’t have enough time to test everything properly.

We have already corrected this issue and another issue causing a crash when using the route button on the pin/poi detail screen and have submitted it to Apple. We expect the new update v1.6.3 to be available by Friday.

At the moment there are 2 options:

    1. Settings > Data Cache > tap Map Data, it will ask you if you want to delete all of the maps, freeing up the 3GB. You may then want to re-download any places you would have liked to keep.
    2. Un-star any places you no longer need maps for. After the next in-app data update, these maps will be removed.
For both of the above options, all of you routes, tracks, pins, etc will not be deleted, only the maps. To get the latest in-app data update, please go to Settings > Data Cache > Check Now.
We are working to provide an easier to use map data management function in one of our next major updates.

We completed the publishing of the latest OSM maps data yesterday, 5 weeks after the previous data update. In this case, we were delayed a week by the emergency hot-fixes we had to make to 10 of our apps due to the new iOS 7 and iPhone 5s, both of which caused serious issues in our apps.

The next major update of PocketEarth will show the OSM maps date on the Data Cache screen so you can see exactly how old they are. We are also working to fully automate the process, so that the map updates will be more consistently delivered on-schedule.

There is some interesting discussion of this here.  There are links on that page of tables of Garmin symbols (icons and names).

Yea, would be cool to support this, but yea, its probably for next year 😉

Yes, URL, symbol text and type should probably be imported and shown somewhere, maybe just at the top of the Notes field.

Note that the symbol field is *not* suppose to be a URL, its suppose to be a plain text description or name of the symbol, where any such symbol name is allowed. For example, Garmin uses its own set of around 50 symbol names and icons. Other vendors use different ones, which may or may not be compatible with one another.  The only good way to handle this field is to have our own database of different vendor symbol names and create our own icons to map them to. We may do this at some point, but it is really a lot of work.

Apple has approved our PocketEarth v1.6.2 hot-fix update which corrects the startup time crashing issue on the new iPhone 5s and other critical iOS 7 fixes.

Unfortunately, we have not been able to reproduce the download issue reported here on any of our test devices, nor have we received any other reports from users about it.  Please let us know if you continue to have this issue with the new version!  If so, you may want to backup your favorites data, and try re-installing the app.

@penneyft: Thanks for reporting this issue!  We have identified the cause of this crash on iPhone 5s and have  corrected it. We will submit a hot-fix update to Apple tomorrow and expect that they will approve it within one week.  Sorry for the inconvenience!

Many of our users have reported that the Dual XGPS works great with PocketEarth, but some of them have reported some initial issues getting it running. It seems to be some issues with iOS itself. These users have reported than one or more of the following corrected the issue:

    • Update the Dual XGPS firmware to the latest version (see manufactures instructions on doing this).
    • From the Home screen double tap the Home button, and close all running apps. Then press and hold the power button to turn off your device. Press again to turn it back on. Also turn off and back on your GPS device.
    • Reset your device settings (Settings App > General > Reset > Reset All Settings). Note this does reset all device settings, you will need to set again your wallpapers, cellular settings, etc. Perhaps first try only to Reset Location & Privacy.
After doing 1 or more of the above, re-pair the bluetooth devices, and test with the manufacture’s app, and then with another GPS app such as the built in Maps app.
Please let us know if this helps, and what specifically fixes the issue for you so we can better advise our users.

Hmm, okay, thanks for reporting this again, sounds like it could be a serious issue.   The only semi-legitimate reason it might be doing this now is if you zoom in to view a map area you haven’t viewed before and the previously downloaded data for it is determined to be corrupt. In this case, Pocket Earth will delete it and re-downloads it. It should be extremely rare that this happens, and if it does it should be only a small download like 0.4 MB.

Yes, we had some discussion about this a while ago, and we agree the notes interface could be better. Some users have also asked to be able to record audio notes and attach photos. Maybe being able to add multiple text notes each with a title could be useful as well.  We will probably consider all of these things together at some point in the future.

    Hi Roy,

We are looking into this issue, and can probably submit the update to Apple by Monday, however, it generally takes them 1 week to approve the updates.
I will post any work-arounds or other new info we have regarding this issue here.

It should, yes.  We have done some basic testing already and it seems to work as usual, though we are still in the process of accessing it more thoroughly. I will keep you posted about our findings.

There are no real technical reasons preventing this.  Its something a lot of users have requested and which we want to do. Unfortunately it is rather complicated to implement this properly, and keeps getting pushed out by more important things.  I will let you know when we have added it to our roadmap!

    Okay, thanks for the feedback!

I think I can release the next beta by Monday. This beta will include a new Sidebar Menus UI and a flat UI appearance (like iOS 7 will have).  This means all buttons have changed. For now we are trying orange for the enabling button. It seemed to work better than yellow and some other colors we tried.
Anyway, you can give your feedback on the new style once you get this beta.

I just verified again that the current datasets are complete, and also tried downloading NZ myself, and it completed without problem.

If you go to Check for Updates, does it tell you that you are already up to date?  Also do you have Wikipedia enabled, and if so in which language?  I only verified the map data and english wikipedia so far, so am wondering if there could still be missing wiki articles in another language that is causing this problem…
    Best Regards

The files listed in Import are files that are put there either by PocketEarth during an Export, or put there by iTunes.

You can use iTunes to put the CSV file there (choose the device > Apps > File Sharing > Pocket Earth).
The other way to import files is to email them to yourself as an attachment and then tap on the attachment on your device (it will give option to Open in Pocket Earth), or to put it in Dropbox, and tap on it in the Dropbox App on your device.
