    I jump in 🙂

France is organized in 27 “régions” (22 for metropolitan France) > 101 “départements” (96 for metropolitan France) > 36681 “communes” (36652 for metropolitan France).
For everyday life, for accuracy and even for a better repartition of “communes”, using “départements” is preferred.
BUT when we travel and for leisure activities we usually use “régions” (ex: “I visited my family in Brittany last summer”). I also think most travel guides are organised primarily by “régions” both to simplify access and because they have a stronger cultural identity.
As Pocket Earth is about travelling, I would recommend keeping “régions” as the first subcategory. Adding a second subcategory with “départements” would be a nice touch, but I don’t see it as a priority.

I have issues with the routing system for trekking, mainly because CloudMade screw things and I can’t control that (I thought editing OSM data would help… but it was already correct). Building your own routing system would probably not help a lot.

Here is a suggestion that would solve the situation for me, probably for BuckE here and the issue in this thread as well: allow manual straight line routes in Pocket Earth.
In addition it would allow people to prepare their route in places where there are no tracks/routes or when they do shortcuts.
When adding a Midway destination, you would be able to bypass the routing system and it would put a straight line to connect it to the previous point. You could therefore mix manual straight lines with routes from CloudMade in a single PocketEarth route.
And you could add Directions based on angle (ex: “turn slightly left/right”<45°, “turn left/right” between 45° and 135°, “u-turn left/right”>135°).
    Thank you,

That would be a tremendous feature for trekkers! (my main use of Pocket Earth)

For information: OpenCycleMap already uses NASA’s SRTM.
    Thank you.

Thank you! This is great news!

    Bug:
    – “magikmap://” does work, but the world is zoomed out completely. It should work as a normal starting: resume last view (location, zoom).
    First suggestions:
    – “?geolocate” would open on current GPS localisation without changing GPS settings (ie: a quick “locate me” on opening)
    – Optional zoom parameter: “&zoom=” with a number going from 1 (completely zoomed out) to 100 (completely zoomed in).
    – Open map with favorite: “?destination=”, “?listing=”, “?pin=”, “?route=” with name of the favorite
    – “&category=XX&radius=YY&sort=[name, distance or type]” to search POI with those parameters
If I take my previous examples:
    – “Museum in Paris”: magikmap://?destination=paris&category=museum (it would keep default radius and sorting)
    – “Restaurants <2km”: magikmap://?geolocate&category=restaurants&radius=2&sort=distance
This would be awesome! Other ideas welcome.
