Great! Many thanks for your high responsiveness!!!
p.s.: I think it’s not only in german wikipedia, i see the same with the english version!
Hi Ortrav,
Would it be possible if a user enters data like ATM, names of restaurants, etc.,I think you missunderstand how the whole OpenStreetMap (OSM) works. it’s like wikipedia, everybody can edit the map. => so it is exactly the idea that you enter your favorite restaurant or correct an inaccurate bus stop. That’s the idea of open source that we share our knowledge. Your care about abuse: it’s not very common in OSM and in any case OSM is moderates much the same as Wikipedia is. If your intersted in OSM read wiki.openstreetmap.org how to get started and how to edit. (You can do some simple editing right on the homepage http://www.openstreetmap.org)What we are talking here is: everybody can use OSM data, and use it in his app – thats what Geomagik is doing in PocketEarth. The thing is, for several months , PE did not update it’s data from Central OSM server. So, when I entered my favorite restaurant on OSM – there it has to be done, only there it makes sense – it did not show up in PE.
Now, this is corrected, and we are all happy!!!!We also discussed that it would be nice if PE included a small POI editor … it would be cool, but there also other apps for this!!!! (see http://www.geomagik.com/forum/discussion/162#Item_12 and maybe also http://www.geomagik.com/forum/discussion/comment/271#Comment_271)hope this clears things up for you!!!Greetings , Nounours!!!!Paying a (resonable) subscription-fee to cover
the cost of downloads is also no problem for me!OpenStreet map is a HUGE project. It obviously out of reach of the Geomagik Team to change OSM data. The quality of OSM depends very much on the region, and how many people are active in this region. For example my town (Bern, Switzerland), the map is perfect. Please compare to Google if you want to see the difference. I know other places, where the opposite is true (e.g. I went to Greece, and OSM was very poor. But in the 6 months since, it has enormously improved.). On which part of the world your judgement is based on??? (I’m always looking for “white map spaces” to go on holiday with my kids and map untouched land, this is a pleasure!)All that said, we all should contribute to make OSM better know and all contribute to the map. That’s why I suggest in my post “features to make PE perfect” that also PE should include editor functionality – at least for POIs. What is on the Geomagik-roadmap is I understand right. If yourself want to contribute to the map right now, please consider these places to start with:http://www.openstreetmap.org click on editOn the iPhone, I currently use this apps (only until PE has it of course)* Pushpin OSM to add POIs* OSM Pad to add addresses and house numbershave a good start in OSM!NounoursStupid me – if I read the “Bugs”-Forum more carefully:
GeoMagik writes about features in Version 1.6:• New group details screen with ability to export the group to GPX and ‘PocketEarth Archive’ formats.Great news folks!!!! Thanks!!!Your plans just sound perfect! The way to implement Public transport as well as editing POIs. I think with this two add-ons you catch a whole lot of user wishes!!! Really looking forward to all this!Concerning time tables: I know that my example is for Switzerland only. But it’s so cool, that I wanted to show it: having direct access from the map to timetables, this is really a very key features, if you travel every day by public transport back and forth the country! (Well, maybe we’re a bit spoiled by our public transport system ..).@BuckEPlace to discuss this:Do you know the OSM – wiki? A good overview on public transport is given:and the refs in there, e.g. the mailing list on public transport.Good to see you’re so enthousiastic! If the metro/bus-line is correctly entered using the new Public-Transport-Scheme, than adding the color tag is an easy fix, which you can probably do for several cities in an hour.Just add the “colour” – tag and the corresponding color value to the relation, and that’s it!It just checked for some major cities:It seems that generally, Métro/Trains are color coded, whereas buslines are not. But there are maybe also not colored on the bus operators map.So, we will not have to much work if we want to improve the colors of the lines. But we promise to do it before we visit a major city, agree???Greetings, nounours.P.S.: We will obviously start AFTER that PE has created the best PublicTransportLayer ever!Dear Bucky,
No, OSM is a bit more sophisticated than that.
If correctly coded by they mapper, the color scheme used by the transport agency is given in the OSM public transport route. It’s then up to the renderer how to display it.
OpenTransportLayer is ugly, but it’s a more a proof of concept. It has chosen to render according to route type – eg all buses are red – and not to the custom colors, so that’s why.
Of course, I expext PocketEarth to make a nice PublicTransportLayer, retaining the right colors 🙂
On the other hand, if the colors are not coded, than PE cannot do a miracle. Then mappers have add the color to the OSM data. If you are a frequent travaller and happen to get this fancy colored printed maps, why not add them? Modifing existing data is a good way to get in touch with OSM!
I will post some links later on to show you how to get started!
nounoursDear BuckyE,
the link in #1 illustrates the timetable-feature, which is solved in a very advanced way in the example website. The Xialia-API allows to get time-table info for every train, every bus, every tram in whole Switzerland (I don’t know if this exists for other countries), directly from the map. This would be a big leap forward!I did not cite this website for the layout of the public transport layer – it’s just the standard OpenTransportLayer, which is, in my opinion, not a very beautiful one.nounoursP.S.: At the time writing, the timetable query does not work. It worked always when I tested before, so I think this is a temporarly problem.Hi BuckyE,
As I understand, PE does not use the Mapnik renderer. So, recreating seems to be technically needed. But as far as I see, the same POIs are rendered with the same symbols as on OSM standard website. The problem is that not all defined POIs have symbols. And, further, OSM allows for custom user arguments …
That’s why I think clustering lesser important POIs to clusters is the way to go.
Concerning the show/hide subcategories, I agree having some kind of hierarchy (switch of the entire subcategory, or if you like go to details) would be good. Replicating the standard OSM structure is not a must, but for people used to it it would help. It’s maybe not at perfect structure, but not a bad as well ….

Hi,
thanks for your reply.
I’m happy to give you some of my top-items I wish to add (see below), but I fear, this list will be different for every user.
Why do you not consider my idea with having a “generic” symbol – e.g. a tiny circle – (and the corresponding category in the preferences), for all the POI’s you don’t have on your list? If you then decide to add a specific symbol for one type, well it will then drop out of the “generic” category.
To make things even better, one generic symbol per features category (http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Map_Features) would be absolutly great.Anyhow, I think you get the point, and I’m really looking forward to see your developments!
Thanks, Gilbert
P.S.: Here my favorites list:
Amenity
ice_cream
kindergarten
car_rental
car_wash
ferry_terminal
taxi
clinic
doctors
arts_centre
community_centre
marketplaceCraft
I think every entry in this category is very helpful, if you need it. Since there are so many, a generic symbol would absolutely be perfect, and also a single switch to turn them all on/off. If you look for something, you show it, if not, not…Highway
mountain_passtraffic_signals would be a good candidate to switch off if possible
Historic
castleLeisure
marina
ice_rinkOffice
again, there are many of equal interest. A generic one would just be perfect …shop
second_hand: of course, very important. Nothing better than being in a other city and strolling through a second hand shop!
again, why are some shops not visible? Best would be to add just one generic item for all shops not explicitly mentioned (see also discussion (https://trac.openstreetmap.org/ticket/3043). If you want to go far, you can also add one sign per type of shop – e.g. “Electronics” “Clothes, shoes & accessories” and so on …
A great app, and all in all a good update. Really worth to contribute in improving it. So please take these bugreports / complaints positively!
7. Does not replace wikitravel by wikivoyage data. The user needs to erase all Wikitravel data first, and then reload Wikivoyage.
If this is intendend to allow user to keek Wikitravel-Infos if he likes, then the user should at least be informed with a warning “You’re Travelinfo is outdated, if you want to actualize…”8. Custom marker:
If you create a custom marker, you cannot name or edit it. You have to “star” it first …As well, you can not delete it. You have first to “unstar” it. Maybe these are “features”, not bugs, but it looks less intuitive than it was before.
9. Clicking on a Wikipedia-Symbol does not allow anmore to view the article. If double-clicked, the node info shows, the text starts, and from there one can open the entire article. Maybe there is a reason for this change, before 1.5 it looked much smoother to me.
