    @MikeB:

Yes, you should fix the map yourself if you find an error or want to add a restaurant. This is the whole idea about opensource/wiki-projects: they are strong because everybody contributes.

You think OSM is bad and has a lot of errors? Well, you should have looked at it five years ago. It has come a long way, and they data quality is in a lot of places getting very go, even better than the official maps.

Currently, there are 2.5 Billions (yes, billions, not millions) nodes in OSM. You ask me (or some other experienced user) to fix them? Well, I do. I do ten, hundred, or thousand every day. And a lot of others do. But I have a list of hundreds projects, a lot of raw data I collected, gps-tracks I want to put in OSM etc. etc. – so I will not go an fix things where I’ve not been, or I do not have enough information. I have to put my priorities as well.

If you really care, then you learn to make small edits. And I promise, everbody will be willing to help you learning.

You think it’s too complicated? I completely agree. I also was often frustrated when I started. Finally, I joined the tagging mailing list (https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/tagging) to try to improve it. But this again is a lot of work.

I do not ask you to spend your time on OSM. But it would help the quality of the map more if you contribute to OSM instead of ranting about the bad quality. Again, OSM is a very complex project, and your very much welcome to help.

    @XOMTOR
There is an iPhone-App which is rather great for adding POIs: “PushPin”. I used it sometime, but it has one BIG disadvantage: it’s only online. Though, even if I’m home and have not to worry about data charges, it’s slow, and I do not use it. So, being in PE for walking around, I’m too lazy to switch to PushPin to do the edit. So I normally place a Pin in PE, and then edit OSM at home with JOSM. But having the exact functionality of PushPin into PE, this would be really great. I don’t know if technically one can take over code, maybe make a joint venture with push pin to put the two apps together? Just a thought .. n.

    Yes, yes.
There must be a very long post of me about this some months ago. Completely agree.
    Just keep in mind:
=> PE must distinguish between bus lines stoping at THIS stop, and bus lines stopping at this stop AREA. Ifnot, one will maybe stand there for hours waiting for the number 9, not realising that it stops just around the corner.
=> I think I suggest something like: highlighting all the lines stopping in this area, showing only the lines on this stop in the info on the top, and in the info screen making two sections: A. “bus lines at this stop”, B. “Other lines in this stop area” or something simiar.

    Another important addition:

If one (or several) bus lines are selected, they should be “sticky“. That means, not being desactivated if I click on something else. I happens to me 19 times out of twenty, and it’s very anoying: I want to follow the bus line, and move the screen, I hit by error another POI, and the bus line has gone. How to select it again? No clue. So I move back where I originally was, an start over.
Or, I did not higlight the restaurant I want to go to. I select the bus line, follow it, and do not see exactly which was the restaurant I want to go to. So I click the restaurant POI to read the name, and … puff, the bus line is gone.
=> so make it sticky!!!! it stays, till I select it again and actively close it. (I’m convinced this makes sense for all cases, but maybe you see other cases???).

Edit: sorry, my following contribution sounds a bit stupid. I saw only the first page of the discussion before writting it, so this seems now a bit out of place.

    Dear MikeB!

PE is a great app. But please do not make Abe personally responsible for all the data in OSM. OSM has about 1 Mio. contributors. And sometimes somebody makes a mistake. But the good news: you personally can fix this error!!! Get yourself a OSM acount (https://www.openstreetmap.org/user/new) and edit it directly in the webbrowser (with the ID-editor, it’s easier), or use the application JOSM if you get to the real stuff (it’s much more powerfull) https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Josm. The taggs are defined here and in the subpages. https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Map_Features

And do not hesitate to ask me if you need support (kuessemondetaeglich at gmail.com).

    Good luck, nounours

I first made a screen shot of Pocket Earth’s list of my maps.

Yes. In earlier versions of PE, it was possible to actually delete the map, but keep it in “MyMaps Listing”. So, you could just go there and select it for reload. I personally thinks it’s a pitty that this was removed.
I think the arguement was that deleting maps but keeping them in the list was to complicated, so this was simplified.

Anyway, you will normally know what you need before you start travelling.

    cheers, nounours

    The best way of working:

1: Load the maps you need to the iPhone. Delete the one you don’t need.
    2. Before going to a trip, make sure you have all the maps you need.
    3. Keep all your personal stuff (selected POIs, routes, Custom pins, whatever) always on your iPhone, it takes so few space that it does not matter.
    4. Make regularly a backup of your personal stuff to iTunes or email, just in case. Maps can be reloaded anytime, your personal stuff can’t.

Yes, PE can check if your map is outdated. OSM is updated several times every second, all over the world. This changes are replicated about every month into PE. So, if you come back after more than a month, ALL your maps will be outdated. So what’s the point in storing them to your PC? Making a differential update with your old map and the new map is much too comlicated, this does not make any sense.

    Hope this helps!

    Dear MG,

PE is “just” a renderer, which display openstreetmap data in sophisticated way. PE does not have own geographic information.
To find out if it’s a data problem of Openstreetmap, or a rendering problem of PocketEarth, please go to http://www.openstreetmap.org and check the data there. If I search for “Calle del torno, Cartagena, Colombia” I do not get any results, thus thinking that this street does not exist in OSM. (But I’m not sure about which Cartagena you’re talking).
OSM is a OpenSource Project with nearly 1 Mio. People contributing to the map. If you are somewhere where the map is inaccurate or incomplete, please modify the map and contribute. Thanks!

well, this I wanted for a long time as well. Not only for PE, but for all apps.

tough I hate iOS7 for a lot of reasons, this is a good point: it has a screen rotation lock built in in the system in easily avaible anytime. So this would probably be the way to go, and not to include it in PE?
(But be patient: I would not recommend to go to iOS7 before you must, and be warned: no way of going back!!!)

I agree with Heron & Xomtor. Having up-to-date data is a must! I understand that updates consume a lot of bandwidth, but like xomtor, I would be willing to pay.

I think the last update from OSM was around the 2nd of Octobre, at least this are the latest changes I did on OSM which are visible on PE. (I think officially, the policy of PE is to update once a month. This is in my opinion the least we (OSM-contributors) can live with. If this is extended to two or more months …)
On the other hand, sometimes I have the impression that not all data is updated at the same time. I do not not if this is intentional, or a problem in the update process.

As you can see, wikivoyage is currently still very much experimental. But I heared rumors that it is heavily worked on. Hopefully, the new wikipedia and wikivoyage engine will make it to the next release …. but seeing all the other important projects (Public transport maps, routing, new interface, iOS7, …) I would not bet on it …

    a reinstall would probably help.

depends if you have unsaved data on the app – POIs, routes, … – you would not like to loose. If so, better wait till Geomagik suggests you something.

    1. I think there is no sense in saving the maps on the PC for later use. Maps change quickly. If you’re map has six months, il will be so outdated that you don’t want to go traveling with it, do you?

    2. I also prefer PE over standard OSM, and sometimes miss it on my desktop (Mac). But, PE is a OFFLINE-map, and therefore has it strength offline. On a desktop you have internet, and thus access to an online copy.
But yes, PE is so much nicer …. but I think the development for a desktop is much different, so probably not really a big chance that Geomagik would invest in that …

    Dear MikeB,

Indeed, time tables are not in OSM, so they will probably not soon be in PE.
There are was some work done on a general interface, and there also some test applications for specific countries. E.g., there is a interface from the OSM map to the time tables for all Public transport in Switzerland:
I personally think having time table info in a map app is clearly out of scope – it will change to often, and once you have them, people will ask for real-time-schedule information. So, there’re are other apps which provide this kind of information. So the map app should link to this services and show it on the map. This will have the downside on using the data connection, but if it’s done in a proper and efficient way, this should work out ok.
So, yes, I hope that one day I will be somewhere in the street, look for the next Public transport stop with the nearby search, click on it, show all the lines and connections, and being offered directly the schedules to where I want to go to as well as real time traffic information. How does this sound?
@Geomagik: it’s just a dream, I do not expect you to work on it tomorrow 🙂

PE is a OFFLINE map app. This means exactly this: You download (at home or wherever you have a “free” internet connection) the data you need – normally this will be a city or a country or whatever.

This includes automatically the map on all zoom levels, all POIs (with correpsonding information as opening hours and the like if available), Wikipedia Entries – and in the new version (which is currently in Beta Test) – also in addition to the Public Transport stops also the public transport LINES. (that’s what we talk about here).
You then go off the road, PE will not need to download anything – you just use the map. Everything you need is already saved on your device.
Why is a first download necessary? The size of the entire OSM-map of the world is in XML 400 Gb, even with the best compression it’s still 29 GB. So you probably don’t want to download an iPhone app with ALL the maps on it, do you?

Thank you very much for the quick bug fix!!!

The german version (at least for Castiglione di Pescaia) is now working.
But the english version is not (I’m not sure if it’s only a update problem, but I tried to entirely removed wikipedia data and reinstalled it, but the main entry for Castiglione is still not there …)
    thanks, nounours.

@BuckE / Displaying lines in offical colors:

Somehow, this point is still open. I entered somemore data, and am frustrated that I cannot check it (at least, better would be: use it!), so I looked for a OSM-map rendering Custom Line Colors:
    All I found is:
(They claim that the update every two days, but I found data for my town (Bern) be outdated for several months at least … so no big help for checking, but at least it shows that’s feasible – NewYork maybe looks good?)
I found some other things, like a line diagram generator:
But not really what we are looking for …
Is a nice PublicTransportMap such a strange request? Well, we’re happily waiting for PE to implement it, and I’m already sure that it will be the best!!!
Keep me posted if you progress somewhere on this subject!
