Willi, I tried the site and the first problem I had was the only choice for transport seems to be car. For a car, this is perhaps the correct route (I say “perhaps” because I don’t have a car and would not know the correct route)  because the ferry boats do not carry cars. However, the first problem I mentioned earlier (going 100M in the opposite direction) is corrected on this map. Instead, it has me turn left at the corner 10M from where I live instead of going south to the next corner. Strangely, this means that this map has me drive 10M in the wrong direction. This map includes no ferry lines, very likely because there are no ferry boats that carry autos – all autos use either tunnels or bridges.

Willi, I’m not so sure the map is faulty. The one-direction streets make no difference to bikes (which was what I had chosen) and furthermore, I just checked OSM and the street is correctly marked. I don’t know about the ferry lines but it looks correct to me. I really don’t know why there were these problems.

I don’t know if this is an example of the bug, but I tried a new route by bicycle with the option to avoid ferry boat turned off. I live about 10M from a cross street. The routing it gave me told me to go 100M in the wrong direction, go down a cross street (also in the opposite direction) and then go back the 100M it told me to go in the first place. IOW, I needed to go northeast, but it directed me to go southwest. Furthermore, although I set to use ferry boat, it again avoided it and sent me through the city to a bridge. There are many one direction streets here but bicycles do not need to follow them. At first I thought it was using an auto setting because of the wrong direction, but then I recognized that the one-direction cross street close to my house even goes in the correct direction for an auto, so now it is even more mysterious.

The biker community can simply buy a phone holder for the handlebar of their bike and easily see where they are and where they need to go. I find that much more useful than a voice telling me what to do next when I’m not sure where I am.

That is very good news to hear. The routing will I hope be much better. As I have written above, there are, I think, already good sources for topographic information that will work with PocketEarth. Perhaps I am the only one who doesn’t see the need for topographic maps in PocketEarth, but I don’t feel that it needs to do everything. I am also looking forward to when we can easily offload and onload maps.

Thanks very much. I am happy to see that the New Route works correctly. I haven’t used “Track Recording”, but shouldn’t that work the way that New Route used to work – GPS on and current location automatically chosen?

Using the New Route, the options I see are walking, bicycle or auto with, as you say, shortest or fastest routes. That is, for walking or bicycling there is no choice of fastest or shortest. Personally, what I would like to see for bicycle or walking is not at all fastest, but flattest. I once used Pocket Earth (two years ago) for a bike route in Bavaria. To my surprise, after a pleasant beginning, we stood in front of a small mountain. I have learned from this and now use either either Maps 3D or Elevation Chart on my iPhone (Maps 3D works like Pocket Earth – download maps in Wifi, use them without any Internet and you can also export your route to Pocket Earth) or this website: http://ridewithgps.com/ I haven’t used the website recently, but you could make a route using elevation data, export the route and then import to Pocket Earth.

I hope that the return of user pins will come to the show all in Nearby. I really don’t understand the reason for their removal.

Thanks for your helpful post. What you wrote did indeed work for me. I thought that since each topic was closed except the first, it would print only one subject. However, I saved it as pdf and got the entire manual. Thanks again.

I agree. I hope that a pdf version will soon appear. There have been a lot of changes and the new manual would be very useful to have.

Many thanks for your helpful reply. I did the update as you suggested and that has fixed most of the problems.

While the Airports menu item in Nearby now works, it seems that the Prague airport is simply not labelled. If you look for the Czech town of Hostivice to the west of Prague (about 10km), you will see an airport. It seems Vienna airport has the same problem. Amsterdam does not have the problem.

Regarding buses and trains: I think trains stations are much more important for travel, particularly in Europe, than buses unless you are travelling only locally. Although I pointed out errors in the local transport, even so, I found the information very useful in practice. I certainly hope that, as you say, it will improve rapidly.

Your point about 140 different POI types is, of course, completely correct. However, nevertheless, I feel it could be better. For example, you could, in the Help file (will a downloadable pdf be coming soon?) show how all the POI are organised. I would never have guessed that the viewing points were in “hiking”. BTW, the Dutch word should probably be “trekken” or even “trektocht” not “wandelen” as it is now. But, perhaps that is a cultural issue.

I still think that, although not perfect, a show only would be better than the system now. I think when you come to a new town or city, you may want to find something. You do not want to find everything. So, you arrive in this town and perhaps first you want an ATM, then a bus, then a hotel, etc. So, simply show nothing, then choose each layer as you need it. This makes much more sense to me. But your suggestion to use “Show All on map” also works.

The “Waypoint” is often, in my experience, something rather sudden – you only use it when you are wandering about and decide to go somewhere nearby. Perhaps next year when roaming costs in Europe will be dropped is the best solution.

Thanks again for your helpful reply.

Thanks for the reply, GeoMagik. It would be wonderful if it would be possible to make a backup of all apps, then delete the unneeded maps from my iPhone and when I come back to iTunes, I would see all the maps listed in the document window and could select which ones I wanted to re-install. I don’t know if all that is possible, but it would be very handy. Certainly all the pins, tracks, routes, etc. would be available again once the map is reinstalled. Thanks again.

Many thanks, GeoMagik. I have been downloading transport schedules (pdfs) before I leave and then bringing them on my phone when I travel. It sounds like I won’t need to do that anymore, but even better – if my plans change, I’ll always have the correct information with me.

This looks very useful. Will an internet connect be necessary, can it be saved when there is a connection or are neither necessary?
