    @BuckEye,

Gotta read more of your great ideas and more importantly implement them! +1

Big +1 to PocketEarth for this simple but great feature.

Very Intuitive and Easy to use. Good bye calculating distance; just zoom-in into the map/area of interest and search!

PS. with this feature, no need to implement “Arrows” or direction to where the POI is in relation to where I am currently at. By showing the POIs directly on-the-map is far more superior than showing a text list of POI and distance with or without arrow/direction.

PS. 128km search radius is irrelevant now considering we can just zoom-in, zoom-out into the area of interest and perform search. Perhaps, you might want to consider removing the radius in the search altogether and just do ‘Search within the Current Map”. It is far more intuitive to use.

“Current Map choice” or “Current Visible Map” sounds a much easier (intuitive) suggestion indeed.
ie, just zoom/pan towards the targetted area, and Search will search within said area only.

    great idea indeed!

Did not know that feature exists on IOS.

Just tried it, and it does not look good on the map though. It does not look good on the IOS either.

From what I can think of, there are only 2 possible causes to this problem:
    1. Maps covering china are wrong;
    2. Some GPS Satellites are giving out wrong timing.

What is the official Term/Name used for this GPS problem in China so I can read up some about it?

I call this Proximity Alert. Months ago, I suggested to have a Waypoint Navigation system (similar to garmin handhelds) wherein we can create a series of Waypoints, when we get near a waypoint, it would alarm alerting the user.

I believe the devs are ‘working on it’.

It would however be best also to have a “Turn By Turn” direction as well and having said that, a true OFFLINE routing. I used PocketEarth very recently to navigate through Super Typhoon Haiyan’s disaster areas in the Philippines doing relief work. There is NO mobile phone service nor internet – no way can anyone get ONLINE routing with that. But my brother’s Android phone got offline routing.

Last Feb 2013 I went to Xiamen China and neighboring cities. Pocket Earth has street maps of them. Lately, I realized the current OSM maps DO NOT have streets on these cities anymore.

Secondly, I once reported before that PE somehow does not report the correct GPS coordinates on Chinese maps. The app’s gps coordinate is offset about 135degrees by 400 meters.

I first encountered “Waypoint Navigation ” with a handheld Garmin. It was very useful for planning a route on maps that is completely off-road, remote, or by sea/air (impossible for any genius apps to figure an efficient route).

It is a very simple navigation system. On the Garmin handheld, I create a series of waypoints, each having a proximity (arrived distance so to speak). When I set it to start navigating. it would select the first waypoint, then draw a straight line to there (from current location). When I reach the waypoint within the specified proximity, it would choose the next waypoint and draw a line to it. Rinse repeat until the last waypoint is reached.

Personally I want this feature – it is very useful when i go boating.

    That’s good news!

I hope the update also fixed the bug when a  “political boundary lines lies on top of a street, the street is not displayed “

I dont like the old icon as well.
but the new one, though better, is not appealing.

When I browsed through the App-Store update section, I thought this app was “Angry Birds In Space” the game….

    Add POI/Waypoint Proximity Alarm.

By default all POI/waypoints have No Distance Proximity Alarm. User can change this setting globally per type or per individual POI/Waypoint.

    ie,
Globally, user can specify a single setting for All POI/Waypoint; or
User can specify the Proximity Alarm for a specific type, say Gas Stations to have 50 meters Proximity Alarm; Restaurants to have 100 meters proximity Alarm; Sunken structure to have 200 meters proximity alarm; or
User can specify Proximity Alarm to an individual POI/Waypoint – 20 meters proximity alarm for Uncle Tom’s House…

There should be a feature also, wherein, user has the option to create a new waypoint or highlight an existing waypoint and then “Navigate” to said waypoint. All the app will do is create a straight line from current position to the designated waypoint; this will allow the user to know the general direction to go to.

This is important for no road navigation either offroad, water, or air. This implies, it is offline.

Likewise, the ability to navigate through a set of waypoints (similar to Garmin’s handheld). User would create a string of waypoints, and then navigate through these waypoints. There will be an option to either start navigating from the start of the sequence, or from the nearest waypoint from current location.

New “Route To”, “Route From”, and “Track with Waypoint To” actions menu.

    I hope this is offline!

Some devices records routes as waypoints. And i believe, the route you just imported is just that, lots and lots of individual waypoints.

You need to convert (or group together) these waypoints into a proper route format file.

IOS strictly prohibits apps from accessing files outside their allotted space.
ie, PocketEarth save/store/copy file to/from another app’s location.

If an app does this, Apple kicks em out of the app-store for violation. This is why popular apps like Wifi-Sync (during iOS 3.xx) were banned from app-store long ago.

What you are asking is a direct violation of this restriction. Currently, the only ways I know apps to share data is through cut-paste, and through the photo album. I dont see these options as solutions to your problem.

A work around is to jailbreak your ipad/iphone and install iFile which can copy/move files from one location to another. It is not pretty and could potentially be fatal to your iDevice if used incorrectly. I would not recommend this if you are inexperienced in these kind of things. Then again, jailbreaking is also against apple’s TOS…

I downloaded the whole map of China, and it took no more than 30 minutes on my end. Maybe there is an internet connectivity issue in here that caused 3 hours.

    Additional Info:
I tried to overlay my saved routes with Google Satellite and Bing Satellite maps; the coordinates matched perfectly.

But when I tried to overlay the routes with streetmaps from OSM, Bing, Google, it does not match. The discrepancy with Google streetmap is 580 meters 128* Bearing. I could not measure with OSM or Bing as I these two do not have maps on the routes I saved.

Any thoughts on this? Perhaps the ability to use maps from different sources, even if it means larger downloads?

If you think larger download is the answer, you will be doubly frustrated.

One GPS app I tried (MotionX) required me to download >300MB for a small city (taking more than 6 hours) and it would not even allow me to download a map for a state (which will take about 70 million tiles or more than 4GB of data). It is not even recommended to have maps of more than 2 cities as the app takes exponentially longer and longer to add more maps. I was in China for a week and MotionX failed to download the map! It was a major FAIL.

PocketEarth is different. It uses Vectored Map technique which I believe is the most efficient! I was able to download maps fast and without restriction!

Most GPS/Map apps uses OSM. The quality of maps is with OSM.

I had once suggested to PocketEarth to use Garmin’s map data. Garmin also uses Vectored Map technique but I dont know if it would be compatible with PocketEarth’s app. However, Garmin’s maps are expensive. Many will not be able to afford it.

    Also add Manual Routing.

ie, We add points manually and the app will connect-the-dots to create the route using straight lines. I find this useful for offoad travel like water or air.

This is a feature available on some Garmin Handhelds. I also call it Waypoint Navigation.
