October 21, 2013 at 12:04 pm in reply to: App ends when I try to make a route to a favorite in IOS 7 #4799
Whoops, same for me: iOS 6.1.3, PE 1.6.3. Immediate crash, and only when choosing Favorites. Others (Current Location, etc.) seem fine.
I’ve used the function successfully before, so assume it’s been introduced with the Scale Bar Fix update to v1.6.3. (Or at least I think I have!)
Dear Geomagik,
Hmmm, interesting. I would have to think more about the design/user attractive issues involved to say whether shaded relief is important to future development. As an old timer interested in landscapes, I have always valued maps which visually present relief. Walking Rome and being able to “see” the seven (plus) Hills in relief is valuable to me. But I wonder how many other potential customers would feel the same!
Similarly, there are obviously at least a few folks who would value topo lines. Trekkers/cyclists who are accustomed to using topo lines would want them, of course. I also would want them. But the use of topo lines would probably be very limited in the general potential customer population.
Ok, I’m not expert enough to be able to check OSM to see what the data actually is. The main problem with this –oh, and, making a route that used the same places, today, brought up the same problem– is that the CloudMade routing REFUSED to allow me to eliminate that node. Somehow, routing in general needs to be able to click on a gray-ball node and eliminate it.
We’ll talk more!
Oh my gosh! As usual, PE has a method. Thank you for explaining. I will try this when we’re home from our current trip. It seems, as explained, a bit obscure for an amateur user such as myself. We’ll talk more when the iOS 7 furor is over!
In Italy now, and have just in the last few days noticed this! Can’t thank you enough for the hot fix!
Thank you Geomagik! Will be in Italy on Friday and hoping our agritourismo WiFi will let me get the update!
OK, but the Open Cycle Map shows only topographic/contour lines, correct? Just tying to stay on top of developments!
At http://www.geomagik.com/forum/discussion/comment/238#Comment_238 (or at least somewhere in the thread) you can read,
“The current version of PocketEarth has something like this already,
though you must start a GPS Track Recording session to access it.
PocketEarth v1.5 will allow more direct access to it by selecting a Pin
or POI, and choosing the “Track to Here” option from the routing menu.
This will display a straight [geodesic] line from current location to
the waypoint along with distance and azimuth. Multiple waypoints may be
added, however the user must manually choose between them. In v1.5 at
least, you will not have start a recording session to use this
functionality, however the info will still be shown in the Track info
panel as it is in the current version. After v1.5, we plan to work on
this functionality more to present waypoint navigation in a simpler and
more focused manner (and to automatically switch between waypoints,
waypoint alerts, etc).“I have no idea what this really means, as I have not tried to construct a route by hand! But perhaps it’s a function you could use? Or at least explore?
Neat! Great!
Actually, the icons in question are GIFs.
I could use a text editor to Find/Change the URLs and replace them with the relevant GIF file names. If PE could import picture files to use as icons, I’d be all set. Whether any other user would ever avail themselves of such a function is, ummm, unlikely?
So, back burner for this, for sure! Thanks for your taking time out now, and don’t answer this post until next year!
Dear tanuki,
I hope the developers don’t mind my butting into your thread! But I can’t help notice there may be a slight confusion about how to fix your problem.
You are speaking of your “Favorites” maps. It looks like, somehow, the transition to iOS 7 wiped out/deleted your maps. So PE is thrashing around trying to re-download your “Favorites (maps).” Unfortunately, as I have found, once Maps are messed up, it is necessary to re-download them.
But, the message from the developers also talks about “backup your favorites data…” This might be confusing. It is possible in Pocket Earth to save your Pins/tracks/routes/user entered “data/”Favorites” to iTunes and re-import that stuff. However, it is NOT possible to save your “maps/”Favorites.” Those, if somehow lost/deleted must be re-downloaded. It looks like you will have to re-download your maps.
Ah, the light begins to dawn! I cannot thank you enough for taking the time when you all are so busy with iOS 7 and PE v7 issues to answer my amateur questions.
I think now I understand better the problem involved with what I’ll call “foreign” icons. Would it be fair/accurate to say the various icons used in PE are built in to the app? In other words, they are downloaded as data with the app itself? The same way Garmin and other apps have their own built-in icons? So that, in general, PE doesn’t have any way to use other people’s icons? Fascinating! I’m so ignorant to not have thought that through for myself!
OK, I can see that I’ll probably be the only –well, nounours might also, but in that case we would be only TWO users — to ever want to import foreign icons. Please ignore the request. It’s definitely not worth spending valuable, precious time on!
On the other hand, perhaps next year we might revisit the concept? The icons found at, for instance, the Megalithic Portal website are not SO foreign in size or format. Simple JPEGs. Perhaps, some day, PE will create a way to use such things. But that’s a “far future” consideration.
In the meantime, thank you again and again for your consideration of my far-fetched requests!
My bloody minded iPad auto downloaded iOS 7 overnight and caused me to exceed our ISP’s data cap! I was tempted to install it. Am I glad I didn’t.
Thank you for this report!
September 24, 2013 at 6:55 am in reply to: Why city map is downloading when country map has been downloaded? #4842I record this experience here for information that might be relevant to a future discussion. On the other hand, if I turn out to be the only user to whom this is happening on any kind of regular basis, we could possibly chalk it up to “corrupted” or incomplete downloads through my notoriously bad ISP Hughesnet.
Today while adding Pins to France, I was using the Nearby Search function. Several times I got an Error Message stating “Some searchable content has not been downloaded…” So something is buggy with my copy or Saving Destinations on my iPad 2 or something!
Hope all is well with finishing up v7!
September 22, 2013 at 3:15 pm in reply to: Why city map is downloading when country map has been downloaded? #4844This continues to happen to me. Just now I opened PE, opened my Favorites Palette, clicked on France (which is green-star Saved), zoomed in with an open-pinch, and got a Downloading Maps notice.
I then tested: used swipes to move the map around at that zoom level. The first swipe resulted in DM message. Another swipe to an adjacent are gave a DM Message. A third swipe did NOT give a DM Message! So I’m mystified.
However, I record this experience here for information that might be relevant to a future discussion. On the other hand, if I turn out to be the only user to whom this is happening on any kind of regular basis, we could possibly chalk it up to “corrupted” or incomplete downloads through my notoriously bad ISP Hughesnet.
Hope all is going well with debugging PE in iOS 7.
Wow! That’s way more than I thought about. Sounds fantastic.
Those functions would mean we’re writing our own travel guides/diaries. So while we’re at it, how about Rich Text capabilities and the ability to export/import a PIN as a .txt with formatting intact? Pretty please?
Thanks for the prompt response. Hope all is going well with iOS 7 development!
September 20, 2013 at 11:33 am in reply to: Why city map is downloading when country map has been downloaded? #4847These “downloads” are very small, yes. They take only one to three seconds. They do seem to occur when I am zooming in, but I am zooming in on areas that are part of Destinations that are green-star-saved. I’ll try to keeo an eye on it to determine more exactly when it is happening. Thanks for your prompt response!
September 20, 2013 at 1:07 am in reply to: Why city map is downloading when country map has been downloaded? #4858Happened again while viewing Maryland, USA. Which is green starred as a Saved Destination. Makes me wonder what I might be missing!
September 19, 2013 at 9:00 am in reply to: Why city map is downloading when country map has been downloaded? #4860This continues to happen to me, albeit not as often. I just updated all my maps (it would be really nice to do that individually, which I can’t seem to do) and have been working on adding pins for Italy. I have Italy as a country, saved as a Destination.
This morning, I zoomed in on a particular highway intersection in Italy, and the Downloading Maps palette flashed for a second or two, behaving as if were downloading: the status bar filled from left to right. Odd.
Perhaps it’s not actually downloading? Updating?
I’d like to add a suggestion for future discussion about, perhaps, v1.8. I’m still wrestling with the routing behavior and have seen an odd occurrence. This morning, the Routing Engine decided to include a footpath in my driving route! I could not get the engine to ignore this obviously incorrect “node.” I spent an hour trying to add control points to construct a corrected route, and the engine insisted on taking me back to that node.
I looked at the OSM map in Edit Mode, but am too much of an amateur to figure out what in OSM might have been the problem. Or perhaps the engine is just screwy this morning!
However, If I might, I’d like to suggest that the little gray nodes become editable. In this, I’m assuming there is some data embedded in the OSM that defines “intersections.” Places where roads connect and a driver can turn from one road to another.
Whether PE continues to use the Engine, or constructs its own routing engine, routing in general would be much easier if I could force the route to ignore/skip over a given node/intersection. Perhaps a swipe-delete could be applied to a node?
I realize that at present “The grey dots on the route path represents the instruction turn points only.“ But they must also represent/be based on some OSM data that defines them as intersections. And given that we have to rely on these OSM definitions, which can be incorrect, or can be interpreted incorrectly, I’d like to be able to delete them!
Thank you for your consideration.
Dear Matt,
Oh, I feel your pain! History is so easy to lose. (As an almost total aside, take a tip from an old timer, and as soon as possible, with the help of loyal companions, write it all down. Even if the document is lost [as so many do tend to be; I know from experienece] the act of writing will help consolidate the memory.)
In the mean time, I’m sure the PE developers have seen your request and will answer it it in due time. Please be aware they are currently in the throes of trying to polish a new v 1.7 to more or less coincide with the iOS 7 release. The new version promises to be slick as goose grease. A few of us have been beta testing and making all sorts of “make it do this and that” comments! So hang in with PE!
And as another aside, does your camera/phone not geotag its own photos? I would have thought everything did by now. But my last camera was a Minolta 570 35mm film job, so you can see how behind the curve I am!
Yours,
Bucky “The Antediluvian” Edgett
P.S. Yep, I see from your attachment the potential “go too fast” problem. I know your suggestion will be appreciated. -
