Good to hear its working.
I think the deleting and re-downloading the maps did the trick.
The setting Download Add-on Content will display contour lines and wikipedia info when online viewing the area’s of which you don’t have the offline maps. (I think) the Increased Base Map Cache will hold more of the online temporary map-downloads in memory. So I suggested these two settings merely as a backup fix in case the offline maps were not working properly.
Happy travels!
January 16, 2023 at 9:53 pm in reply to: Topographical maps missing contour information in some areas #47219Hi John,
I had no issues with the contour lines for Tasmania.
First try the following:
• Delete the whole map of Tasmania by going to the Menu » Managa Maps » Offline Maps, swipe Tasmania to the left and tap Delete.
• Re-download Tasmania. If that doesn’t work, try the following as a backup plan (while on WiFi):
• Switch on the Menu » Settings » Download Add-on Content
• Switch on the Menu » Settings » Increased Base Map Cache
• Zoom in on Tasmania until you see the contour lines appear. Skim through the area you are interested in while still on WiFi. This wil stay in the cache memory until it is replaced by other data, so I don’t know how useful this will be for you but it might do the trick.Regards, Johan
The ‘text button’ Open is on the top-right, next to the title of the map (in your screenshots Recent).
The text of the button is nearly the same as the background, so you don’t see the text of the button. If you set the brightness of your screen to maximum then you will see the dim button ‘Open’.
Instead of importing from PE you can also share the gpx-file with PE. Hold the file until a pop-up menu appears and tap Share. You will find PE in the list of apps to open it with.
A bit cumbersome: the last imported track will be on top of the other. So delete and re-import the track that you want on top.
Open door: selecting the track makes it stand out from the others.
Good to see the website is up again.
The menu on the mobile website is missing a menu button and is working only when tapping on the far right side (edge) of the header (on an iPhone 13 mini with Safari). When tapping anywhere else on the header the menu shows for a second and then reloads the home page as Kritou mentioned.
Same here: Failed to download route from server.
Switch on the button Hidden.
BTW: I think you don’t have the latest version. In the latest version they changed the name of the button. When it is switched off it is called Hide when not selected. When switched on it is called Always Shown. (A bit confusing I must say).
- By selecting the track (or calculated route) in the map
- Tap on the info bar at the top of the screen (the name of the track or route)
- Switch off Always Shown
- Go back to the map
- Deselect the track/route by tapping the cross in the upper right corner
- You cannot navigate an imported GPX-file. In my opinion this is not a real problem since the map and position arrow are very clearly visible, also in the sunlight. Anticipating on a next turn just by looking in the map works very well.
- When you select an existing track and switch off Hidden (Verberg op de kaart) the track will stay visible when not selected. This way you can create a new track while following the existing one. (When you go to Settings » GPS & Compass you can switch off Track Auto Hidden and Route Auto Hidden. This will leave any imported or created track or route visible by default.)
I have an example where the routing goes ‘terribly’ wrong. See attached screenshots.

You must be logged in to view attached files.… and even better, you get to choose the color of the track at the time of import.
Just to be clear, the color picker shown at time of import is the color for waypoints (pins) included in a GPX-track, not the color for the track.
But, you are right that the color for an imported track used to get the same color as the last selected track color.
In an upcoming version you will be able to set a default color for a new track (and route).
Rotate the map: holding two fingers on the screen and make the rotate gesture.
You can find the switch under Settings > GPS & Compass > Map Rotation Gesture.
The Map Layers has been changed to Activities. Currently there are 4 different activities: Standard, OSM, Hiking, Cycling. For each activity you can now independently set the map layers.
June 21, 2015 at 5:59 pm in reply to: Position arrow: higher contrast / left-right = port side – starboard #8233I would like to bring this to your attention again. I often get a comment about this from my ‘students’. (I give PE workshops to cyclists). They complain about the arrow not always being clearly visible. (Especially when using the cycle layer with the blue regional cycle tracks or a blue imported track.)
Another very handy GROUP related feature would be to be able to add Favorites found within a map to a group
(Selected map » View Favorites » Edit), the same way when you press the Edit button in browse » Favorites/Favorites by type. I would use this to add all favorites of a country to one group so I can easily hide them. (This could also be done by adding a Hide Favorites switch to a map!)Also, being able to Edit a found set of browse » favorites/favorites by type would be nice. Now this is not possible because the top menu bar is hidden while entering a search string (which is currently causing the crash in Travel Guides?).
@GeoMagik: It would be handy if you could also export a group as CSV (pins only).
OK. The reason I started this topic is that I noticed that people who follow my PE workshop are confused by this. They really don’t know which app to buy (and the price difference is also not helping). Ideally I think it would be best to get rid off the PRO app and have only the in-app purchases. What would help is to recommend the in-app version in the description of the PRO app on the app store, and mention that there is no difference in functionality.
If you want to mass-edit pins already in PE you can export them (either in GPX or CSV format), edit them and import them back into PE. When you are only concerned about pins then CSV format is the way to go! A GPX export is also exporting the routes and tracks! And the pins are easier to edit in programs like excel / open office / numbers. After editing you will have to save as CSV again. Make a backup of the original GPX or CSV before you start editing the file!
Also, be aware that the pins will lose any assigned group. The import will create a new group with all the pins from the CSV file.
The problem with exporting and importing GPX/CSV back into PE is that you will end up with duplicate pins. In this case you will have to remove all your pins in PE before importing them back into PE.
BTW: when exporting and importing Pocket Earth Archives you won’t end up with duplicates! This is one of the advantages of Pocket Earth Archive compared to GPX/CSV. (But you can’t edit pocket earth archive files.)
