One small improvement when viewing the map from Destinations is to show the selected map one zoom level out.
Now the selected map (be it a city, region or country) is zoomed in a little too much. The yellow area is almost always filling the whole screen, and often a part of the selected yellow area is falling outside of the screen. I think zooming out one level gives a better orientation of the selected destination.Received the beta (as you might have noticed already…)
The orange color works like a charm. Perfect!
I also like the green color for start route and the red color for tracking, following the general convention. Now they are distinguishable by both color and icon. Nice job.
I don’t think it has to pop out. Just distinguisable that it is establishing GPS connection so you don’t press it again by mistake, thus switching it off again. On = blue is distinctive, so is another color or a blinking blue/gray
Maybe flashing blue/gray?
The blue color for “GPS activated” is fine by me, since it is consistent with the other buttons (Tracking and Orientation).
Sometimes it takes a bit longer for GPS to be activated (when in the mountains or woods, when there is no A-GPS signal nearby), and when switching on while riding a bike a more distinctive colour for “establishing GPS connection” would be helpful. This is still happening in the Beta version.
Also when zoomed in all the way it did not show the minor roads. I just solved it by going to Settings » Data Cache » Check Now.First I tried deleting the downloaded areas and zoomed in on Bandirma while online with WiFi, but it probably used the incomplete data cache. But it is still strange that it didn’t show all the information in the first place, since my last Data Cache update was showing august 5th, and I downloaded the maps on the 2nd of August. Or was this region recently updated in OSM?I never used the update button before, because I had the ‘Automatic Updates’ set to Monthly. Now I have set it to Weekly. It might be useful to have an update button in ‘My Destinations Details’, so when going to a certain region you can make sure these maps are updated, instead of downloading all your saved destination maps.Perfect! I was looking for this setting, but didn’t expect it there. I assumed GPS arrow had an on/off setting only.
Maybe better to name it “GPS arrow and orientation”
I realize know that my (huge) compass deviation is mainly because I have a battery inside the case! Anyway this is solved when setting the orientation to COG.
Nice improvement to be able to slide in the values.
A small thing is that the iOS bar is showing.
And when in landscape mode with the buttons off you can not get the buttons nor the values back , except by going into portrait mode.
Look ahead in North-Up mode works like a charme since the new update, thanks!
It looks like the compass is being used though. So when PE is in landscape mode the orientation is 90° off. Also when mounted on a (steel) bicyle the compass has a deviation.
It might be better to use Course Over Ground instead of compass heading. Also, when your not moving the map should be centered instead of look ahead, which corresponds better with using the COG (since there is no COG when standing still).
Nice job on the last update where it is possible to show the values also when not tracking!
Readability is a little better, but still too small when cycling in bright sunlight. I hope you intend to make them bigger in another update?
I mean to get rid of the scale when values are shown. When moving the values are of interest, when searching for a place the scale is wanted (and then you are usually not moving)

When clicking the value buttons, show a full screen with bigger values. I attached an example taken from the CycleComp app, this screen is perfectly readable in bright sunlight. (Sliding down this screen shows the map again.)A good point. But the margins used now are very tight. I think it would be possible to stretch them a little bit.Tweaking the minor roads:- lowering the threshold for the white/minor roads, so showing them a bit longer when zooming out.
- switching to gray lines when zooming out even further, with a proper threshold to hide them so the towns don’t show as blobs & tangles.
Weatherbase also has an app in the App Store, appropriately called ‘Weatherbase App’.
A few other interesting weather sites:
- http://www.weatherbase.com, see data source (taken from public domain) and licensing for more information (but not open source). Also check out the ‘vacation finder‘ on this website.
- http://www.climate-charts.com/Climate-Links.html and http://www.climate-charts.com/about.html
Not necessarily since you could safely use the closest city which is in the weather database. As long as the ‘weather-city’ being used is mentioned, together with the distance from it, the user knows that it is an estimate.
On the weather-and-climate website for the US only 60+ cities are listed. There is probably an (open source) weather database available with more cities than this. (After a quick search I found http://www.worldclimate.com/sources.htm).May 11, 2013 at 10:40 am in reply to: Selecting values of routing and tracking labels (now speed/direction/altitude at bottom of screen) #4636One additional note:
Label size option: small (3 values), medium (3 values) , large (show only 2 values).May 8, 2013 at 6:34 am in reply to: Selecting values of routing and tracking labels (now speed/direction/altitude at bottom of screen) #4621Thanks again for the very quick response!
While cycling the following info might be interesting, depending on the landscape and the mode of cycling (commuting, touring or racing):
– average and maximum speed
– trip distance and trip time
– current time
– total ascend and descend (maybe text color coded)
– Rate of Climb and Gradient (color coded text for up/down))
– additional feature: indication of acceleration by color coding the speed text or a small arrow pointing up or down.I realize that most of the mentioned values are available in the info-bar at the top of the screen, but these are not at all readable while cycling.
Another additional feature (?!) would be to have sets of three values, and be able to swipe through them, on the very same spot where they are shown now. If it would be possible to configure up to three of four sets of three values it would be perfect. (But now I’m pushing my luck.) To be able to select these values just by tapping would be good enough (for the next update that is ;•).
Some reasonable iPhone apps to check out this functionality: BikeBrain (biologic) and Roadbike (runtastic).
What I don’t like about these apps is the too many buttons and labels (and a bad mapping functionality). What I like so much about Pocket Earth is the approach of maximizing the mapping area and minimizing button and labels, in combination with the ease of use and a lot of other goodies of course. Thanks for the quick response. You guys are really on top of it!
One additional remark: because of the color coded text, you don’t need to read the text to know what the status is. This is most helpfull when racing through busy traffic.
