Dear mfloreen,
Oh gosh, that’s a great disappointment. (I lost several days worth of travel photos a few trips back, and am still angry with myself!)
I’m by no means the expert, because I’ve never recorded a Track! But you don’t mention actually Finishing your recording. The Help does say to tap the recording button a second time, while it’s red, to “stop” the recording. Is it possible this was not done, and PE timed out or your device was turned off, inadvertantly not saving the track? Just a thought!

I too would like Areas. I wonder if importing KML documents would suffice to define the area?
I’ve wanted to have a reproduction of http://lovebunnies.luckypro.biz/01_stuff/05_other/01_rioni/index.html (a Google Map I created years ago) on PE since I first got PE!
Being able to import KMLs–it’s so easy to map areas in Google Earth, and easier than it used to be to use Google Maps for areas–would serve multiple purposes. But perhaps KML capabilities are copyright/patent restricted?
I see that in the current version, the Track button on the map gives me some options. It brings up “Add Waypoints to Track,” with some options. None of the options are, sorry, particularly useful for what I had in mind.
I wanted to be able to tap a place/point along the track and add, for instance, a water source, or a viewpoint, so that as we went along the track (walking, driving, whatever) we would see that something was coming up!
The choices of Map Center, Street Address, etc. don’t seem to match what I wanted to do: tap a spot/place along the track and add information.
Thanks to all who might chance to read this and have some advice!
Dear nounours,
It’s true there are other apps for real-time time tables. But I bet in a year, GeoMagik will have figured out how to partner with the metropolitan authorities in major cities, the way HopStop does in New York.

Dear MikeB,
Well, the PE mapping won’t necessarily include “schedules.” nounours will be able to speak to that, knowing more about the kinds and dgrees of information available from OSM, the map data source.
But at least we’ll be getting “maps.” And they look like they’re going to be great!
The OSM maps are incredibly complex. Many if not most of the PE icons are a bit too subtle (beautiful, yes! but a bit subtle) to really stand out against the “background” map and be immediately legible.
So, in this case, how about switching to a simple gray background with a white question mark while “establishing GPS connection”? Make it pop!
Wow, that’s tricky. I’ll never remember it, though!
Do you have the latest updated data? I thought I had Turkey saved as a My Destination, but I didn’t. So when I zoomed in on Bandirma, my PE downloaded the small area of the city. The PE version seems, to me, to have all the details I see on OSM desktop.
I can’t enlarge the screen shots (for some stupid Firefox reason) but I’d also be happy to test. Loie and I will be in Florence and Rome in October.
Thank you for your concern. I actually liked being able to see the download percentages for each Destination. But you are right, it would be handier to know the overall percentage, and even handier to know both the overall and the individual data amounts PE is projecting it will need to download.
What would be ideal, from the point of view of someone still struggling with a data cap, would be the ability to update Destinations individually, and know beforehand what the data amounts were going to be. But that’s another story!
Thanks for all the hard work the team does on this terrific app!
Yes, but it needs massive updating and expansion. I’d be happy to help with a text version that incorporates all the tips found here, and better explication of the thing in general! That could be built back into the app.
We know the frustration you must feel! I get spam sporadically from feedback forms on my personal web site. Thank you all for wrestling with this. Perhaps a Captcha?
Perhaps one thing to consider is –if it’s not more trouble than it’s worth– making some kind of Packages available? If getting all the available data isn’t necessary for my purposes, allow me to download certain categories of data? Roads, types of POI, topo layers, etc.
I’d be happy to do without all the POIs: most of them are irrelevant to our traveling.
Then, I could do In-App purchases of only what I wanted, as I felt the need. Pocket Earth is already by far the largest app on my iPad. I could stand to slim it down!
Just a thought. Maybe that’s too complicated.
I’ll pay more!
Looks like poor old GeoMagik has its hands full with the robot invaders at the moment, eh? But I heartily agree a small subscription fee would be acceptable for more frequent updates.
May 31, 2013 at 3:55 pm in reply to: Better driving instruction, earlier indication of change of direction with GPS #4744Oh, the tiny bit of lag is certainly acceptable, yes, thanks. When a car is moving, the navigator just has to give the driver a little bit of advance notice. That’s all!
May 27, 2013 at 10:30 am in reply to: Why city map is downloading when country map has been downloaded? #4742I’ve since zoomed in on other places without the “problem download” occuring. So it’s a mystery to me! Perhaps I had zoomed over part of an area not saved, and PE+my ISP were a bit slow in responding?
I don’t know everyplace, of course, but my experience is that Open Street Map is more or less on a par with Google. In Europe that might not be true: especially it Italy, a lot of small cities and towns have no OSM street names at all. On the other hand, I’ve found instances in Italy where OSM is more detailed than Google.
But I’d say, overall, OSM is rather less detailed in Italy than is Google.
Several PE users can show us how to work in OSM to add information.
May 23, 2013 at 9:41 am in reply to: Why city map is downloading when country map has been downloaded? #4714I’ve been looking at and Editing some PINs since I upgraded to v 1.6. I have England downloaded for offline use. (In the My Destinations List, all Maps have a green star and say “Saved for offline use.”) When I zoomed in on London to edit my PINs, PE downloaded maps: the little window with the green status bar opened and showed a download.
Is this to do with having upgarded PE? Do I need to re-download the Map Datas? Thanks!
