The data can certainly be uploaded to a Mac using iTunes but I don’t know if there is any other way the Bad Elf can talk to a Mac
I bought a very cheap iPod Touch 4th Generation and loaded it with PE and the BE app solely to use as a navigator on my pushbike. There are also a couple of cheap and simple handlebar mounts that I found on the internet
The bad Elf website listd dozens of iOS apps that are known to work with it’s range of GPS devices
I use a Bad Elf GPS Pro on the bike (and motorcycle) as it allows me to put my iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad in Airplane mode and then turn back on the bluetooth. This means a great saving in power without the phone’s own GPS running. It’s datalogger will record several days worth of riding with the optimlal logging rate selected – the data can then be downloaded to the Bad Elf app for storage/forwarding. As observed elsewhere remembering to switch on/off ancillary equipment is a problem but I find the unit will happily run all day on a charge via it’s micro USB port and has a “sleep” mode when you are not on the move
They come up on eBay for about £100

I created a route of a 30min ride that seems to average about 24km per hour on the flat
Great stuff!! That will be a boon to those who are sent routes in .gpx format from Garmin Mapsource and Basecamp. At the moment these are automatically presented on importation to PE as tracks. ( how come these two Windows programs can create routes in so called .gpx format?)
I recall that you have done this on an ad hoc basis in the past – such an in app facility will be very welcome
Hello Nomae – I think that some of us would like a simple “in app” feature that does not require an internet connection but just creates a “route” of sequenced waypoints joined by straight lines
You ask, “why?”
Well, for example, I do a lot of long haul passenger flying and boredom often drove me to watch the Airshow where you can see your present position, ETA, height etc etc on the seatback video screen. Now, if I can get GPS reception, I can watch in small scale map detail our progress and, for instance, compare it with features visible through the window. Such a routing facility would let me automatically download in advance and detail the counties we are due to transit
Yeah, yeah, I’m a geo nut and who on earth else wants something like this?
Well, inshore sailors, light aircraft pilots, hikers who just need the next waypoint – in fact anyone whose journey through life does not require a published cycle track, approved hiking trail or paved surface!
As I see it, full offline routing by road/path is desirable (and under consideration I believe) but, I suspect, not easy to implement while keeping the app small and simple. What some would like to see however is a simple method of joining up a sequence of waypoints with straight lines without employing an external routing engine
This feature seems to be a popular request – any chance of an implementation?

I’m curious why the OSM map of the Greek island of Skiathos has so much more data than PE?

Have to agree that an input wheel would be good – would also cut down on input errors
How’ about it GeoMagik?
I like the idea of option 1 as this would presumably download the associated mapping by default if not already installed
OK, I can see where you are coming from but I recently built a route from the UK to the south of France and back for a motorcycle trip. It was easy enough to keep adding destinations that were defined by using the map center option (cross hairs) A couple of time I got a bit out of sequence but it was just a matter of reordering the “destinations” with the “three bar” facility
I also used the shortest route preference to try and force the preety route!
I’m not sure I understand your issue in point no. 5
Having selected my departure and end points for a new route surely it is just a matter of pressing a finger on the route then dragging the resulting orange control point to a position you wish the route to navigate via – or am I missing something?

Yep, looks though it is working OK now
btw the change of routing engine seems to be a great improvement – routing now is possible (in New Zealand at any rate) on unsealed roads
While bug swatting please please fix the issue with the rendering of this website on iPads
I have just spent a month in New Zealand where PE proved to be a great planning and routing tool, allowing me to dispense with paper maps completely. The current routing engine however would not route along “white” roads which are unsealed in NZ (but not the case in UK!!)
Will the new provider allow this?
Having the same problem – very difficult to read or post in the forum
