Magnifying glass is maybe not very useful. Not sure this whole select via map feature is even that useful? Other apps just force the user to use the menu All Maps screen to access this info and download maps.
April 17, 2014 at 8:35 pm in reply to: Distinguish between the selection of Cities, Regions and Countries (and the magnifying glass…) #5501This is actually how it used to work a long time ago, but because countries can vary wildly in size and so do regions and cities, it makes it too difficult to select many items. We changed from that to a more complex size/population/proximity based selection system which we found worked much better. Not saying there isn’t still room for improvement but this is the best we have been able to do so far.
Thanks for the feedback! We are still trying to work out some kinks in the new routing system and should have an update on a couple weeks.
Its true the Route > Add Destination feature is missing a “Select Item on Map” option which it should have. Currently you would have to select the item on the map, then tap its info panel to get the info screen, then tap the Route button to add it to the current route.About that error message, it means there is already a route open on the map (shown in the info panel). Rather than going to the menu and New Route option, you have to tap on the current routes info panel to get to its info screen. Alternately you can close the route, and use New Route option again if thats what you wanted to do.Thanks for the feedback! Let me comment on a few points:
Nearby > Areas was completely broken, thanks for pointing that out. It has been corrected, just goto Settings > Manage Data > Check for Updates to get the fix. After the small download, you may need to close and open Pocket Earth again for it to take effect. I am not seeing any issues with Streets, if you continue to see it, let me know.We did separate Bus Stations and Stops due to popular demand 😉 Many cities have only 1 or 2 bus stations and many 100’s of stops, so if you just want to find the main stations its really helpful to have them listed separately. For Train/Subway/Rail they are all combined still mainly because they are not well distinguished in the map data from OpenStreetMap. Not sure why Bus Stations would show empty for you, I did fix a similar issue as with “Nearby > Areas” recently, so maybe it was before that fix. Other potential reasons: Search Radius is set to 2km and there are none in 2km from the current map center, Data has not been downloaded fully (city doesn’t have green star), OSM data is poor for the given city and doesn’t have any tagged bus stations. If you continue to see, let me know in what city you are looking and if it is empty every time or just sometimes (could be a bug, if you say streets category also is empty sometimes). The issues you mention with the public transit lines are likely data issues in the OpenStreetMap project. There are not a lot of apps or websites that visualize the public transit info in OSM yet, so the quality of that data is not great everywhere yet but its improving rapidly. Empty colored circles represent lines which have not been assigned references/line numbers. I will double check Bärenwirt stop and the vienna airport in OpenStreetMap and see if the data is missing or if its a PE issue. You can use Settings > Map Layers to turn off layers which you don’t want to see. The Hiking layer also causes Pocket Earth to show more View Points. We would like to add a more fine grained control over this, but not sure the best way as we doubt many users would want to look through the full list of 140 different POI types and enable/disable them individually :/You can use the Nearby Search screen to choose a category or sub-category such as Money or Money/ATMs and use the “Show All on map” option to view only those. The Waypoint functionality is meant mainly for outdoors, hiking for example. For in the city we do offer online point to point routing with driving/walking directions. Even though its currently an online only feature, its very useful for planning say a multi-stop walking tour of a foreign city. The routes can be saved and used offline later in combination with the GPS telling you where to go.Thanks for the feedback! We will consider it for the next update.
Not currently, but this has been an often requested feature and should be added soon! For now, you can show a single group on the map, hiding the others. Do this using the View button on the Group Info screen or by long-press on the item in the favorites/my groups list.
You also cross list favorites into multiple groups so you can go in a group, select all items and add to another group for example.Walking option is still present in the app! On the New Route screen there is an option for Transport mode and tapping it allows you to change it. For existing routes, just open their Info screen from the favorites list or by tapping the Info Panel at the top of the screen. You will see the same option to change the transport mode. I have attached 2 screenshots just to be clear!
We did update our Help Manual in the app to the new version! If you see something in particular that seems out of date, let us know and we will correct it! The help manual on our website is still out of date and will be updated in the next few days. Sorry about the delay.I understand what you mean, we did change a lot in this version! We try to not do that often, but we felt like the old version was extremely difficult to use and hundreds of our users told us the same. Based on lots of user feedback we tried to simplify things and make it easier to use in this update. Though of course for our existing users who are familiar with the old way this can be a pain to have to re-learn it, but hopefully its not too bad! If you have any other specific questions, we are happy to help!If you download a country is should include all map data in it in full detail and it is not necessary to download individual regions or cities of it. I think I have seen an issue with Wikipedia that is not downloading properly for the green stared placed.“Deleting” maps by unstaring or tapping the trash icon does not immediately delete them but rather marks them for deletion and will be in the background afterwards (because deletion is actually a slow operation). Thus if you then tap the star again or download button, it will scan for any missing maps and if it doesn’t find any, it will tell you all requested maps have downloaded. So sounds like maybe you ran into a bug with this. What country did you try to download and where did you zoom in the map and find it wasn’t loaded? Could you also tell me what device you are using and what version of iOS? Thanks! If you have the ability to send us the crash logs after your trip that could be helpful. Please update to the latest hot-fix update 2.0.1 if you haven’t already done so. It does require that the maps be downloaded again. If you are in Offline Mode then Pocket Earth would behave the way you describe as its waiting to (re-)download the maps and is showing white screen till then.
Ok thanks! looking into it.. and yes, we just did a redesign of website and some things are bit quirky still. next week we will sort out website and forum stuff 😉
Hi, thanks for reporting this! I just tried though on 3 different test device and don’t see any crashes or bugs with the distance measurement tool.
Could you make sure you are running the latest version of Pocket Earth (v2.0.1 just released a few hours ago) and try again?UPDATE: Apple has approved our 2.0.1 hot-fix update. It is recommended for all users. If you get 2.0.1 then you shouldn’t need to follow the above procedure.
When launching 2.0.1 for first time you *may* see the Setup Wizard which will quickly download any required data which was missing. After the Setup Wizard is complete everything should be back to normal and you shouldn’t experience any more crashes! If maps for offline places need update in order for them to work offline again, they will begin downloading automatically (as long as you are not in Offline mode). Please switch the Network Mode setting to Online or WiFi Only and wait 10 seconds to see if such downloads are needed and have started.Sorry again for any inconvenience caused and let us know if you run into any other troubles! Post on our forum or email us directly. The forum embedded in our new website seems to be having lot of different quirks.. I am looking into them..
I think I have an idea already about what is going on.Could you tell me if you did the Setup Wizard appeared after the app update? If not, did you do an in-app data update after the app upgrade? If not, please tap on the Settings button, go to Manage Data and Check for Updates. Let me know if this corrects the problem! ThanksHey,
Could you try to locate and email us the crash logs so we can diagnose this issue? You should sync your device to iTunes first then follow these instructions.Hi @Sune,
We just released a really major update to Pocket Earth that improves usability a lot, making many things easier to do now!You can delete track and other favorites by tapping the star to UNstar them. You can also go to the Favorites list and swipe-to-delete them. Let me know if you still have trouble!Hi, Sorry for the slow response! I have not seen that issue before, but maybe you can update to our latest version and see if its still happening? We just released Pocket Earth v2.0 update, its a really major update, like 8 months of work 🙂
Most likely the entire text is being sent from Geosphere, but since & and a few other characters are reserved they should be escaped from Geosphere’s side. We can try to “work-around” it from PE but it really this is a hack and it will not be perfect.
All apps should “URL Escape” any content that they send to other apps, so really it would seem to be their bug.Yea we are being attacked by spammers, not sure why, and we already have a Captcha and 2 anti-spam plugins :/
Anyway, since Apple uses URL scheme to communicate between apps, & and some other characters are reserved and must use a special code instead: %26 means &
If you run into any other problematic characters, this site gives the escape codes for everything. We will look into it on our end, even though it is supposed to be considered invalid to use such characters, we may be able to make it work for most cases.
