Thanks for reporting these issues! We are investigating and will release a hot-fix update as soon as possible. We have already figured out 1, 2, 4, 5 and 6. We haven’t been able to reproduce 3 yet.
Do you have any more information about when 3 occurs? (e.g. are you selecting a group from the Pin Detail Screen? What kind of editing, renaming or otherwise? When does it crash exactly, when exiting the detail screen back to map?)
Thanks again!
A new update PocketEarth v1.5 is now available! While it does not yet include an automatic iCloud based sync, it does offer a much improved “manual” sync:
This update includes a new Export/Import format called “PocketEarth Archive”. This format can be used to backup, restore, or transfer *all* of your favorites content precisely and without loss of information (unlike GPX, etc). On Import it also intelligently merges the data with your existing data, avoiding the creation of duplicates.
Finally, this update supports the standard iOS “Open In…” functionality, so you can export your data directly to Dropbox and other cloud services via their respective apps for quicker transfer between your devices!
PocketEarth v1.5 has been approved, and is now available for download/update!
Note that an in-app data update is not required, but is highly recommended! This is needed to get the latest OSM map data, wikipedia articles, travel guides, and for some of the new features to function properly.
We have posted a visual sneak peak of some of the great new features in PocketEarth v1.5 on our Facebook page. We have also now submitted this update to Apple. Should be available for download by end of next week!
Ragnakore,
The current version of PocketEarth has something like this already, though you must start a GPS Track Recording session to access it. PocketEarth v1.5 will allow more direct access to it by selecting a Pin or POI, and choosing the “Track to Here” option from the routing menu. This will display a straight [geodesic] line from current location to the waypoint along with distance and azimuth. Multiple waypoints may be added, however the user must manually choose between them. In v1.5 at least, you will not have start a recording session to use this functionality, however the info will still be shown in the Track info panel as it is in the current version. After v1.5, we plan to work on this functionality more to present waypoint navigation in a simpler and more focused manner (and to automatically switch between waypoints, waypoint alerts, etc). Thanks Ozgeo, Lauralux, BuckyE, and everyone else for your comments and great feedback!PocketEarth v1.5 will include a Settings > Map Layer option to hide all Pins and Fav POIs. v1.5 is now finalized and we are hoping to submit this update to Apple by friday for release by end of next week.
In a coming update we will try to add the option to hide Pin/POI by categories and by user defined groups. We would also like to add pin clustering, so that multiple overlapping pins will display on the map as a single icon and not obscure as much of map. Thanks for the feedback!Yes, I think this is more or less a direction we want to go. A number of users have expressed confusion by the fact that we separate Favorite POI from Pins. We will likely try to unify them, and add the ability to set a POI category on them. Eventually we would also like to add a service to allow users to contribute POI back into the OSM project, and even to rate/review them (OSM is lacking in this kind of subjective info).
In our coming update we have removed the Favorites screens tabs, replacing them instead by a drop down menu to change the view, with an added default view of “All Favorites”. I imagine we could add other automatically organized views in a later release, for example, to browse “All Favorites by Location” or “All POI/Pins by Category”.I really like the idea of being able to assign POI categories to Pins, and to show them with these icons on the map. We will probably also craft our own set of POI icons on the map to match the POI Categories too, but as there are around 150 POI icons, this is a lot of graphics design work to do. Note that the current version of PocketEarth does allow you to customize the Pin icon already, by choosing from 10 icons and 10 different colors (Go to Pin Detail screen, tap Edit, and scroll to the bottom).BTW, our Nearby Categories do *not* come from OSM. OSM has a somewhat unfriendly freeform POI tagging system, so we and most other OSM apps create our own categorization scheme and map OSM POI objects into it. Also for displaying the info about a POI, we reprocess the OSM tags in order to present it to the user in a more concise and easier to understand way. Also so that we can localize it to the different languages that our app supports. Thanks for the feedback and we agree this would be awesome! Its on our roadmap already, however it is quite difficult thing to do, and will be some time before it is implemented! We will post again here when we have more info about it.
Note that if you zoom into a city on the map, you can already locate specific streets by going to Search > Nearby > Streets and entering the name or partial name of the street you’d like to find (without the address number!) Once you have found the street, you can pan the map along the street to find the specific house/building number you were looking for.We haven’t used Evernote before, but we can check it out and see what would be involved to support export to it. Note that PocketEarth already supports export of Pins to CSV format, which you may already be able to use in Evernote (either directly, or by opening in Excel and copy & pasting it into Evernote).
Open the route, and un-star it, then tap the X button to close it. Alternately, you can locate it in Favorites > My Routes, and delete it using standard swipe-to-delete or Edit mode delete functionality.
Hi Myfiveacres,
The WiFi only models of iPad (as well as the iPod Touch) do not have GPS hardware built-in and is thus unable to locate you when not on WiFi. This is because the GPS hardware is normally built onto the 3G/4G chipset which these devices lack. One option is to use a compatible, external GPS device, such as the Dual XGPS150.Sorry for the delay everyone! PocketEarth v1.5 feature set is now finalized, and we are now doing the final QA testing, translation, and graphics for this update. The update should be available in about 2 more weeks!

It had not come to our attention before, but looks like this is a bug in our data processing. In particular these purple dotted lines represent political boundaries, and it seems there is a bug that when they happen to be along a street, the street is not appearing as it should. We will try to correct this issue as soon as possible and publish the updated maps. Thanks for letting us know, and sorry for the inconvenience in the meantime. I will let you know as soon as it is corrected! The Settings > Import screen lets you browse and import GPX and CSV formatted files into PocketEarth. To use this the files must be put in the app via iTunes by choosing your device, choosing the Apps tab, and finding PocketEarth in the File Sharing section.
An easier alternative is to email yourself the file, and open the attachment on your device. When you choose PocketEarth, it should show you the Import Options screen. After you tap the Import button on it, the imported data can be found and selected in the Favorites screen, usually under the My Routes tab. (You can get to the Favorites screen by tapping the black and white Star button (4th button in the main row of 5))Thanks for the feedback! We would be happy to look into Tripit functionality and integration possibilities for a future update of our app.
For now PocketEarth does support data import via CSV and GPX formats. If Tripit has a way to export data into these formats, you may be able to use it in PocketEarth already. Thanks for the feedback! Our next update will include sub-categories in the Nearby Search screen, which will help restrict the results to be more specific, and will thus show less items and make it easier to find what you want.
We are also thinking to replace the current radius options with a slider so you can set a lower range, but this won’t be in our next update (probably the one after it). Till then, I’d recommend using the By Distance sort option, so you can see the closest items first.Sounds useful, we will try to add a Map Layer option for this in one of our updates…
BTW, OSM has surface specification on about 6 million road segments, which is about 10% of all roads (though some road types have an implicit surface specification).March 22, 2013 at 2:02 am in reply to: URL Scheme (Launching and Controlling PE from other Apps) #4558Ahh thanks for the bug report. That was the reason we hadn’t published this info yet – it wasn’t tested well enough 😉 Our next update will have a revised URL scheme and will work better.
I forgot to say that you can specify the zoom already via zoom=ZZ as you suggested. However the valid range is 1 to 19 which is the natural range that our app supports (these zoom levels have same meaning as they do in online map links). Thanks for the other specific examples, we will consider them for inclusion.March 18, 2013 at 7:27 am in reply to: URL Scheme (Launching and Controlling PE from other Apps) #4556Thanks for the feedback! PocketEarth does support some basic URL scheme functionality already, and we will be happy to consider additions to it for a future version! Current functions include:• Launch PocketEarth: magikmap://• Launch to specific location: magikmap://?lat=XX&lon=YY (where XX and YY are replaced with actual coordinates in Decimal Degree units, eg: Paris would be: magikmap://?lat=48.85&lon=2.348• Create a Pin at a specific location: magikmap://?lat=XX&lon=YY&name=NN&desc=DD (where XX and YY are same as above, and NN is name of pin and DD is text to go in the Notes field. Thanks for the feedback! We would like to do public transport route overlays, but do not have a specific timeline for this feature yet. We will let you know once it has been placed on our roadmap!
You can hide the Wikipedia ‘W’ icons already, albet it is a bit hidden feature. Go to Settings > Map Layers > Wikipedia > OFF. This will only hide them, and not uninstall the dataset. For address searching, you should go to Search > Addresses tab > click on the blue Search icon at top right. This will give you the same multi-field form as for routing (which does yield much better results than a single field). Once you select your result, you can tap the Star icon to save it. -
