This also looks a a recent bug (since 2.0 perhaps). WIll look into it.
Thanks for reporting! Aprons are suppose to show already, so this is some bug. We will investigate.
Pocket Earth has this function as google, but its less prominent because we are not primarily a routing app. You can tap on the Info Panel for any POI/Pin on the map, then you will see a Route button. This gives you Route To Here and Route From Here options.
v2.2 update should be available later this week it includes a number of usability improvements to the routing feature. It will also correct the address search issue.
1) That’s strange, assuming a good WiFi connection, it should take 10-15 mins for that size download. Pocket Earth v2.2 will be out in about a week and has some improvements to maps management as well as being more robust. Hope it will solve this issue!
2) GPS can function well completely on its own without WiFi or Cellular. It will show you your precise location on the map and you can even use the Route Navigation mode (Play button on route info panel). However, Airplane mode must not be on as this disables GPS as well. Instead, you should disable Cellular/3g data directly in the Settings app, as well as WiFi/Bluetooth (if you want to save battery). Final caveat, without Cellular, the initial location fix can sometimes take a bit longer, like even up to 1 minute in worse cases, but once it locks on, it updates continuously.
We can only offer the routing options that our service provider offers unfortunately. Long term plan is implement a full offline routing engine and at that point we will have more control to offer such things.
That said, you can use the Driving: Shortest Route transport mode, this will tend to prefer smaller but more direct roads over freeways.
Definitely, and its even on our short term road map! Long term we are planning to do full offline routing as well 🙂
But we have some essentials we have to do first like automatic multi-device sync of favorites.
Really depends on iPhone model and how old it is. As well as your system settings and how many apps are left open in the background. You can google search for more ways to save battery, but the main ones are turning off GPS in the app, or turning of 3g/cellular/wifi/bluetooth/etc. Double tap Home button and swipe up to close BG apps which may be using battery.
We haven’t done definitely battery life tests with Pocket Earth, but we have done careful battery profiling and spent hundreds of hours optimizing it for reduced battery drain. We are confident it uses less battery than our competitors 🙂
Best Regards
Also, you can move many items at once into a group from any of the Favorites list screens. Just tap Edit at top right, then tick the checkmark next to items to be moved and then tap the Group Folder icon at toolbar on the bottom and finally choose 1 or more groups to add the selected items into.
If some items already belong to a group but not all you will see a Grey checkmark next to it.
Also, Fav POI and Pins are treated as completely different data types currently, and My XXX only filters your data by 1 type at a time. But of course a group can have mixed types/content.
Our next update will also allow you to hide a whole group of pins/pois from the map when you don’t need them visible.
This will be corrected in a few days. Please see this discussion for more details.
Sorry about this, it will be corrected in our next update v2.2 in a few days!
Basically we use 2 different address search services for best results, and the OSM based one accidentally got broke in the last update! Sorry for the inconvenience.
Just wanted to follow up that I believe these issues were resolved in v2.1.1 already, but that our next update v2.2 will have a greatly improved (simplified) way to download/delete maps and which is more robust.
v2.2 is expected to be available for download within the next 10 days.
This issue has been resolved and downloads are now working properly again. Sorry again for the inconvenience!
Our hosting provider is experiencing an outage since a few hours and they are working hard to correct it. Very sorry for any inconvenience! Please know that we use one of the fastest and most reliable hosting providers available and they have never had an outage before.
I will update when this has been resolved, but it should be within a few hours.
@Tobias:
Definitely agreed, will be corrected in next update.
What about just using the “User” sort mode and dragging the pins to your preferred ordering? Perhaps then you don’t need to even prefix your pins with numbers?
Thanks for reporting! This will be corrected in the next update.
There are several tools and techniques you can try, depending on your use case:
- Favorites screen has several sorting options to choose from at top, the last one “User” means you can order how you want, by tapping the Edit button and using drag n’ drop to order them as you prefer.
- Use “Groups” to make your own custom lists. Items such as Pins and Routes can be added or cross-listed in more than one group at a time making it a powerful tool. You can also order items within individual groups as you like using the first technique. You can use this to make lists such as “Places to check out”, “Best Finds”, “Italy Trip”, etc. Groups can also be easily shared with friends who are using Pocket Earth by tapping the Share button on a Group’s Info Screen.
- For the favorites screen, you can use the search bar to type in a location. Typing “paris” for example will show you everything located in Paris.
- The Map Info Screen for places has a Favorites tab which shows you a list of your favorites located in that place. For example, if you are looking at Paris on the map, tap the main menu button and Paris will show as your current map in the Maps section near the top. Tap Paris, and then the Favorites tab at bottom right. You can also use the My Maps list to quickly get to your favorite places and view the Favorite items in them.
Sorry got sidetracked with new forum setup, v2.2 development, and major OSM data processing improvements. Might still be a couple weeks before I can look into the building names really, but I am sure we can fix them!
A new maps data update is now available though, latest data, fixed issues with gaps in highways, faster map rendering, lowered app memory usage, less chance of crashing on older devices.
We’ve finished migrating to a new forum setup. Should be much better now, but let me know if you have any other issues with it!
Pocket Earth lets you choose from 7 different coordinate formats in the Settings. I am not sure what Garmin is using, but I am sure it is one of our supported formats.
Just to let you know, we did switch routing providers in v2.1, and the new one appears to produce much better routes and is based on more up to date OSM data than our previous provider. It has also allowed us to add new options for avoiding ferries, tollways, etc. Hopefully it has improved the routing in UK? If not, it is probably due to poor route tagging in the OpenStreetMap project in that area.
