You can edit a GPX file in any common text editor.
To add notes to a pin (=waypoint):
<wpt lat=”46.6555045″ lon=”13.0199147″><name>Test gpx export</name><desc>Blah die blah note.</desc></wpt>
or with a more readable layout (and with added symbol):
<wpt lat=”46.6555045″ lon=”13.0199147″>
<name>Test gpx export</name>
<desc>Blah die blah note.</desc>
<sym>marker-pin-sleep</sym>
</wpt>(You could also use a CSV format which might be easier to edit multiple lines in an excel sheet for example.)
First the easy part: you can delete a favorite by tapping the star in the info panel (or the detail screen) of the selected favorite. It’s an on/off toggle.
Another way to delete favorites (either pins, pois, routes or tracks) is to go to Main (left) menu » Favorites and tap the Edit button in the upper right corner. Now you are able to select multiple favorites. To delete the selected favorites you can tap the trashcan in the lower right corner. To answer your question about groups: instead of deleting the selected favorites you can add them to a group by tapping the folder button which is next to the trashcan (placed at the lower middle).
This will also work in the Favorites Per Type sections: My POI, My Pins, My Routes and My Tracks.
When I use iFunBox I get the following message:
“App Sandbox access is restricted by Apple to ones with ‘iTunes File Sharing’ enabled since iOS 8.3. Jailbreak is required to open the sandbox of this App.”

Is there a solution to this?
You will first have to send the gpx file to your iPhone. The easiest way is to use mail:
- Send yourself an email with the gpx file attached.
- Open de mail on your iPhone.
- Tap and hold for longer than a second the attachment icon in your mail.
When you tap shortly the content of the gpx file will be shown (a lot of gibberish): in this case tap the Open in…/Share icon = upper right button. - Select Pocket Earth to open the gpx file with… Voila!
- You can view the file right after the import. You will also find it listed in the Favorites or My Tracks.
Instead of the mail I recommend to use a cloud drive like Dropbox or Google Drive. When you place all your gpx files in your cloud drive on your computer/laptop you will have them automatically available on your iPhone (and all other devices) with the cloud drive app (i.e Dropbox app). When your collection of gpx files grows this is the best way of administrating them. By opening the cloud drive App (dropbox or google drive) and tapping the gpx file you can open them in the same way as using the mail app.
It is not possible to record a track while ‘playing’ a route.
The conversion can be done via a diversion: Export a track as a GPX and mail it to your self or (open it in Dropbox for instance). To do this press open the detail screen of a route and press the Share button (top left button). Select GPX and then Email or Open In… The next step is to open the gpx file and import it back into Pocket Earth.
You could also use another app like Road Bike (runtastic) to start recording your track. You will have to juggle with two apps a little, but it might do the trick for you. (Road Bike keeps tracking your ride in the background while you use PE for the mapping.) Bring some spare batteries…
I think a sender’s crosshair adds extra functionality which is not really necessary I think, because you can share a pin to do exactly what you are describing. By creating a pin of your current location and sharing the pin via SMS (pe link). The name of the pin, the selected color and icon is send over. (@geomagik: The Note is not shared though, which would be a nice feature.)
I agree that when sending a map center location it would be nice if a pin is created at the receiving end. Just like entering a co-ordinate.
@geomagik: It would be nice if you’re able to select the current position by tapping the position dot/arrow. By selecting the position dot it becomes a ‘floating’ pin which could be shared like a pin, and while moving you can see the actual street name in the info panel. Also, you could optionally show the GPS Info panel only when the position dot is selected…
I have no suggestions on why recording a track on you iPod does not work anymore. But you can export all your favorites – including tracks – via the Settings Menu » Export » (Pocket Earth Archive!) Export all data…
You create a back up this way and by importing this file on the iPad you’ll have all your favorites there too.

You must be logged in to view attached files.Could you check if the maps are actually downloaded completely. Go to the Main Menu (left) » Offline Maps where you will find all your downloaded maps for offline use. It also shows the memory size used by the specific map. If a map download is not yet finished you will see the progress of downloading (% or ‘Waiting’ when not yet started).
A vote from me to.
It would be great to basically have the same icons as the POI’s, but with a small touch to distinguish a pin from a POI. The way it is now – the pin colors are different from any POI color and the pin like arrow at the bottom – would distinguish it enough already I think.
Any progress on the contour lines?
It is implemented in OsmAnd (GPL open source) as a separate plugin. The size of the data is reasonable. Check out my pdf to install the plugin and download relief and contour lines (dropbox link)
I forgot one question:
- The favorites are only stored on your iPhone.
- You can make a backup by exporting (Settings menu » Export) a pocket earth archive (iTunes / Mail or Open In…).
This will create a single file with all the favorites. You can import this without worrying about creating duplicates or overwriting newer versions of the same favorites. The export/import is also handy to copy favorites between devices.
The manual is a bit outdated. In recent versions they changed quite a bit in the menu’s and favorites handling. I will try to answer your questions
- Favorites are poi/pin/route/track/group
- If you tap Per Type (the last entry) in the main menu (left) it will unfold and show the Favorites per type (My POI, My Pins, …). On the iPhone 4s you will have to scroll down a little to see them.
- Info panel is the black bar at the top of the screen which shows the name of the selected favorite.
- The info screen (I prefer to call it Detail screen) is the full size screen with all the details of the favorite. By tapping the info panel it opens the info-details-screen of that favorite.
- The route is automatically saved when changing the name or adding a waypoint from within the info-details-screen. Here you will also find a + Save button, which changes in a Delete button when already saved.
- You can change the name of any favorite (pin/poi/route/track/group) by tapping the name itself in the info screen.
I don’t know any walking routes but I strongly recommend to search for one! I reckon there will be a lot of (small) differences between the cycling and a hiking track.
Search for something like: “hiking Camino De Santiago Via Da La Plata gpx” and you will find plenty of websites.
Good luck!

This happens to me sometimes when I select a train station for instance (when positioned on a track/platform). By dragging the destination (start, end, control) pin a little to a road close by solves it.
I had to use the zip format to be able to attach the file to this post. So here it is.

You must be logged in to view attached files. The Via de la Plata is not integrated in Pocket Earth. But I found a GPX file on a dutch website which I attached to this post. By mailing the GPX file to yourself you can tap the gpx file in the mail app on your iPhone. You can then use the Open with… functionality to open the gpx file with Pocket Earth. I did not check the track in any way, so please make sure I sent you the correct one.
By googling “Via de la Plata cycling gpx” you will find many other websites with GPX files. Happy cycling!
@twowheels: I’m using a casing from Lifeproof. They are really good and I suspect it protects the smartphone better than any waterproof Android phone. When I’m on a cycling trip I always leave the iPhone in the case, because it is slim enough to slide into your pocket. Also the – optional – handlebar mount is very handy, you need only one hand to mount and unmount it.
One vote from me.
Being able to change the bright green border around a favourite POI would be really great! I mark many POIs, but I would also like to be able to distinguish between them. I was thinking of some kind of rating system, and setting the color would be a great for this (and consistent with setting the color of a pin). Great idea!
You can edit them by tapping the name itself when in the detail screen. This works for routes, tracks, pins and even poi’s.
