Hi,
We have definitely noticed the same thing. MQ seems to be using extremely old OSM data. We have already replaced them with another service and it will be released in PE 3.8, hopefully in the not too distant future.
Sorry, this is a new bug in v3.7.1, it will be fixed tomorrow in v3.7.2.
I believe you may be on the Cycling Activity map which shows local, regional, and national cycling routes highlighted in strong colors. Please change the Activity to Hiking, Standard, etc, or customize the Cycling Activity to hide them.
Activity can be found near the top of the main menu in the blue box. Tap the arrows to change Activity or tap the name customize the selected one.
Yep! And just like our other supported coordinate systems, you can:
- Search for locations offline by entering in the search bar at the top of the main menu.
- Copy from another app and open Pocket Earth, it will auto-detect it and ask you if you want to view on the map.
- Set as your preferred coordinate display format to see it used for map center point and on Pins, POI, etc.
Good news, 10 meter worldwide offline contours are coming very soon, in Pocket Earth 3.0! And if you are interested in helping us beta test, you can try it out now. Just send us an email at beta@geomagik.com and let us know the following info:
• Which iOS devices do you have and what version of iOS is each one running.
• Your username on the Forum.
• Your primary location and language. You will find it in the Settings App under Privacy > Location Services.
Some islands are missing from our index, this is an issue we are working to resolve. For the moment however, you can instead download Falcon and this will contain all of the data for Curacao!
No iPad 2 should still run PE just fine. Must be something else.. Can you check using iTunes if PE produced a Recovery.udb file in its Documents folder? If so, please email this to us!

OK, can you try doing the in-app data update? It may be crashing because of a compatibility issue with older map data.
The hidden screen should be accessible in all versions of app, but it is tricky to open (was meant for internal use only): 2 fingers, swipe down, along right edge (last 1 centimeter of screen.) of About screen.
You can still download the maps directly along a route/track. Just go to the Info Screen for that track by tapping on it in Favorites, or by tapping on its info panel when it has been opened on map already. There you will find at end of the Overview section a Maps item, tapping the download button to the right of it will download the relevant maps.
You can also visualize the download area by enabling the Show Place Download Area option in Settings > More Settings menu. Once enabled, tapping view on any Country/Region/City will highlight the download area in yellow.

Did you get the latest in-app data update also? If not, perhaps this will help. Could you first check though which data version your Pocket Earth is using: tap Settings button > About > swipe down along right edge of the about screen using 2 fingers to uncover a hidden screen and see what it says for Manifest Version.
Also, you are talking about the search field at the top of the main menu right? And is it crashing just when you first tap on the search field to activate it?
Ahh, yeah 459 is really old data from last September. We fixed some bad bugs in our data handling in 2.7 which requires updated data. We tried to avoid this News problem (and other little quirks) by rolling out compatible datasets several months ago, but September 459 is too old. Sorry about that, was best we could do without having to maintain a huge chunk of old code just to be compatible with the old data. Once you update to latest maps data, the problem will go away..
You mention data update problems, maybe make a backup of your data (Export Pocket Earth Archive file) first before updating the maps just in case.
Hmm, sounds like an issue we had at one moment in beta development, but it shouldn’t be in the live app. Can you tell me the Manifest Version by going into the About Screen and swiping down along the right edge of the screen using 2 fingers?
These should be corrected now in the latest version (2.7) after getting the latest in-app data update.
We will add a “Prevent when Plugged In” option in Pocket Earth 2.8.
@jsgblom: re: “It would be handy if you could also export a group as CSV (pins only).”: Good point, I was thinking we already supported this :/
Sorry maybe its not clear, but the “Settings > Share Map” feature is not meant to share your current location. Rather it is meant to share the currently showing map view, weather GPS is on or off. Maybe we can improve this by having two options in the menu: “Share Current Map View” and “Share Current Location”.
For the moment though, the best option to share your current location is to press and hold on the map until a temporary pin appears above your finger and drag it directly over your location. You do not need to save the pin. Just tap on the Info Panel and then tap the Share button. You can also tap on the name in the Info screen before sharing, to give it a name, or change the icon/color.
Thanks for bringing this to our attention, we will investigate it!
There is no different between PE Pro app and PE Free with Pro Upgrade. Sometimes we put one or the other on sale though so the price doesn’t always match.
@jsgblom pretty much said it all already, just want to re-iterate about the duplicate pin thing. Best option is to make a group of pins in PE, and export it as CSV, modify then re-import. There will be duplicates but they will be organized into 2 groups, once you see that the imported group looks correct, you can easily delete the original group to remove the duplicates.
Regarding GPX, please note that GPX is always imported as a GPS Track (this is what GPX format was designed to handle). If you export a PE Route as GPX, it will import as a GPS Track also, and thus loose a lot of information, including the turn-by-turn driving ability.
