Thanks for the suggestion! We’ll consider adding printer support for a future update of PocketEarth.
You can export routes as GPX and they will include the directions on waypoints. So the information is there, but I am not sure how well other software would actually print this. The setting is only for displaying coordinates. For entry, we currently offer the DMS roller wheels, and Text entry. Text entry supports many common formats and you can find examples of them in our Help Manual.
We will consider adding DM wheels for a future update. For now you can also enter DM coord via the wheels simply by setting the S wheel to 0.Hi, if you tap on the Search botton on the map, make sure the Destinations tab is selected and search for Roma, you should be able to find it in the list. However, note that its listed with the region where its located in and appears as “Roma, Latium”. See the attached image.
Alternately, you can locate it on the map and tap on it to get the Info Panel at top, then tap the star icon on it to download. If you have zoomed all the way into it so only Rome/Roma is showing on the map, you can press the ‘i’ button at top right instead to see the info about the place in the currently onscreen.Let me know if this helps!Your right and we are aware of this issue. It is mainly due to some technically issues which we need to solve.
You can use the standard swipe-to-delete function to remove groups (swipe side to side over the group in the favorites list to reveal a delete button).
This will remove the group only, all items in the group will remain listed in any other groups they were in as well as in the main All Favorites and by type lists.@nounours, we are aware of the issues you mention in points 3, 4, and 5, and are filed in our internal issue tracker to be corrected. However, we can’t give a specific timeline for them at this point. Editing capabilities, I would say at this point, are beyond the scope of our app. However, we may reconsider in the future, or produce a separate editing app. The ability to add and correct POI through PocketEarth is something that is on our radar though.
The colour property on the route relations in OSM are intended to hold the official colors as used on maps & signage yes. If that info is lacking (for bus lines or otherwise), an app like PocketEarth should pick unique colors for each line from some palette so its easier to distinguish visually the lines. At least for the metro systems in all major cities, this data is probably pretty good already.
The schedule/time table info in the first link is coming directly from the sbb.ch website, and is thus Swiss only. There was an open community project for this information started by Steve Coast, but I cannot seem to locate it now, and last time I checked it was still in the planning stages. I wouldn’t expect reliable public transport scheduling info anytime soon unfortunately :/Our first iteration of public transit in PocketEarth will probably be two basic enhancements:1. Tap to select any metro or bus stop on the map, and highlight all the lines passing through it, in the correct colors if available.2. Map Layer settings to enable highlight of all metro or bus lines on the map in the correct colors.@nounours I have added a Map Layer called ‘Minor POI’, which if enabled, shows pink dots on the map for other shops and brown dots for other amenities. You can get this now by going to Settings > Data Cache > Check for Updates. This is just meant as a quick hold over until we have time to add proper icons for some of these things.
@BuckyE, PocketEarth does not allow POI overlap normally. Those images were meant to illustrate why we don’t allow overlap! But simply skipping the drawing of any POI icons that would otherwise overlap is not the best solution. Clustering will help a lot, once we get to implement it (hopefully in the next month or so). I would also like to have our own set of POI icons with a solid backing like we have for the Nearby categories. These would be more distinguished from the map itself and easier to make out.May 16, 2013 at 1:25 am in reply to: Natural reserves showing up wrong – covers everything underneth them. #4659We have corrected the natural reserves so that they no longer cover up whats underneath them. You can get this change now by going to Settings > Data Cache > Check for Updates
May 12, 2013 at 1:32 pm in reply to: Location curser bug on iOS 6.1.x on PE v1.5 when no WiFi signal present #4640Hi Steve,
This is normal. Most non-dedicated GPS devices (smartphones, etc) use AGPS or Assisted GPS technology. This uses WiFi and/or cellular signals to assist in the initial GPS location detection. The GPS still works well without WiFi/Cellular but the initial location fix can take a bit longer. From our experience this is usually 30-40 seconds, but in some cases can be up to 2 minutes. When you enable the GPS in PocketEarth you should see the GPS button turn from black to gray while it is waiting for iOS to detect and give it your GPS location. Once it has the initial fix, the button will turn blue, and should continue to update and track your movements accurately and quickly. Also note that Airplane mode will prevent the GPS from working. See this post for some related information. Thanks for the feedback, we’ll consider it for a future update!
We decided not to allow sub-groups as it complicates a number of things in the UI and thought it would cause more confusion than its worth for some users.
Groups are always listed in the Favorites alphabetically, so you can make use of this so that groups are ordered together. For example, if you wanted to make a group called Trips with subgroups for different places you’ve been, you can label all of the groups like “Trip: Germany”, “Trip: France”, then at least all your Trips will be ordered together at ‘T’ in the list of groups. You can also then use the search for “Trip” if you like to show all of your Trip groups…We are planning to add some “automatic grouped views” in one of our coming updates, so you can choose to see “All Favorites by Location” or “My POI by Category”.Also note that you can list pins and other items under multiple groups. A favorite POI for a restaurant for example could be listed under multiple groups like “Best Restaurants” and also under “Places I visited in 2012” and under “Trip: France”, etc.Hi BuckyE,
A few of the new features require the in-app data update. Specifically, you need the data update in order to see the latest set of grouped Map Layers, to see the new sub-categories in Nearby search, and to see the new icons on the map for the 20 or so POI types we added.Otherwise, to answer your points:1. The new filtering menu is only on iPhone currently. On iPad there is a lot more space available and we left the tab bar at bottom for now. It offers all the same options as the drop down menu. To access the new “All Favorites” view, you can tap on the selected tab to deselect it.2. We renamed My Listings at the last minute to the more standard terminology “My POI”.3. Sounds like you almost got it! Just you have to tap and hold and drag from the right side of the item. See attached SS for illustration.BTW, I agree that what POIs are important is very subjective, but what we are considering less important is just POIs that are of less use to travelers and outdoor enthusiasts, since those are our main target groups. A car dealership for example is probably of very little importance to such people. We started with the standard set of POI shown on the OSM website, since those are the ones the community decided were most important to show for most people. We then added a number of additional ones that we thought would be useful for our target audience.
Basically, drawing overlapping POIs looks pretty bad, so we have to do something. See screenshots for illustration (and this still doesn’t include the dozens of “lesser important” POI which we currently do not draw at all, nor does it include the standard ones which we just don’t show at these zoom levels). The most ideal solution is clustering them on the map. The easier solution, which we do now, is to simply not show all of them. But we are working towards a clustering solution, and towards creating the graphics for and including all other missing POI!Hi BuckyE, thanks for the feedback, we’ll consider and work on it!
Yea, the Map Layer definitions and the Nearby Category definitions are contained in the “data” update, not in the app itself, so we can update it anytime. The current set was last updated along with and available since the v1.5 release, which is why we recommended the data update in our release notes 🙂
Yep, we have had requests for this already, and its on our list! I just can’t say right now exactly when it will get implemented. We have a large number of tracking related enhancements that we want to make so we will probably do an update focused on this at some point relatively soon.
Thanks for the feedback! We’ll probably go the way of making the units much smaller and in a different color, so that the main numbers can be much larger and distinguished from them.
May 10, 2013 at 2:43 am in reply to: Tracking: hide infobar with one tap instead of double-tap #4628Agreed, more consistant with the downloads panel which we changed from double tap to single tap to hide in v1.5.
Wow, thanks for the video and the detailed information, we will definitely look into this soon!
I do notice that SpringBoard is using 11330 resident pages of memory (44.3 MB of RAM), even more than PocketEarth at time of crash! This seems oddly high for a process which is only responsible for drawing the app icons on the home screen. But its probably (hopefully) not related to the jailbreak, and of course nothing we can do about it :/
For the time being, I’d recommend turning off the Proximity Caching option in the Advanced Settings of our app. This should save some memory and at least reduce the frequency of the crashes. We will look into the memory issues, and hopefully have at least some improvements to it in the next couple of weeks.
