Hi,
The iPod touch doesn’t support GPS. So you cannot record/navigate with an iPod touch. If you have Wifi, however, you can turn “GPS” on but it will only show you the position of the WiFi hotspot. If you do have Maryland as a favorite destination you should be able to find it under “My Dests” and check its download status. If it is downloaded you should see a green star there. If not, you can download it from this screen.
v1.4 will be released soon and will only include CSV/GPX import functionality as well as bug fixes.
Hi Bucky,
We are reading the forum! 🙂Map data updates require all local maps to be redownloaded as updates cover the entire Earth. Do you have Maryland as a favorite destination? If so, it will be redownloaded automatically during the update.
From your question, it sounds like you might be relying on “automatic” map downloads which happen automatically for each “map” you look at. A better solution is just to download all of Maryland by setting it as a favorite destination. To do this, go to destinations, search for “Maryland” and select “Maryland, United States”. Then you can click the blue button at the top-right of the screen to select it on the map. Now you can press the star at the top-right to save Maryland as a favorite destination. You will be asked if you want to download the maps for Maryland.
Dieser Fehler wurde in der aktuellen Version v1.3 behoben. Nun sind Routen mit mehr als 10 Zwischen-Markern vollkommen unterstützt.
This was fixed in v1.3.
Hi,
Thanks for reporting this! We have FIXED this particular issue. An update will be available through the AppStore in the next couple of weeks. In the meantime, may I suggest just avoid favoriting train stations/bus stops in rome. Instead you can just make a pin in the same position to mark these places.
Thank you for reporting this bug! We will have a look into it and try to fix it soon. We will let you know.
We are happy you like PocketEarth! Your request seems reasonable. We will discuss adding this feature in one of our next versions. We will post any update here.
PocketEarth v1.3 is now available for download from the AppStore, and includes the most recent OSM map data, travel guides, wikipedia articles and an updated Destinations list, as well as almost 70 enhancements to the app including a Pin & Listing Detail View with an unlimited Notes field which will detect and auto-link URLs and phone numbers.

October 30, 2012 at 11:24 am in reply to: Visualize the extend of cities, regions and countries #4425PocketEarth v1.3 Update is now available for download and includes almost 70 improvements. We have included an Advanced setting that you can enable to show you the map area which will be downloaded for any city, region, or country. When this setting is enabled and a place is selected in the Info Panel, the corresponding download area will be highlighted on the map in yellow. To turn it on, go to ‘Settings > Advanced > Show Place Download Area’.
Hi,
We just released PocketEarth v1.3 which includes a complete redesign of the routing function. Let us know how you like it.
Thanks. Our map data comes from the OpenStreetMap (OSM) community mapping project which has excellent coverage in many places, but less detail in some other places. You can view the map detail on their website (http://www.openstreetmap.org or for cycling at http://www.opencyclemap.org), and even contribute to it by adding missing content.
Many of the other map apps available on the App Store are also based on OSM and will have the same level of detail as PocketEarth.
The great thing about the OSM project is that anyone can contribute to help improve it.
If you have some time and interest, you can read more on their website http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Beginners%27_guide.Hello. When you download the PocketEarth app, it includes only the app software. In the app, you must be connected to the internet the first time to download the required data, and then to download the maps for the area you would like to have offline. For example, within the app, you can select and download all the maps of Japan, or just the cities or regions you want. The maps downloads in PocketEarth are 2x or 3x smaller than our competitors, and as much as 100x smaller than traditional mapping apps, but can still be a relatively large download for large countries, and thus is not possible to include in the initial app download itself.
A WiFi access at a hotel or internet cafe could provide the internet connection so that you can start using our app. Alternately, if you have internet on your laptop via ethernet wire, then you can broadcast WiFi from the laptop to your iPod.Our Destinations DB currently includes only towns with a population more than 1000 (though our maps cover all places available in the OpenStreetMap project). For towns smaller than 1000, the regional info is determined by the proximity to other nearby towns, and Cadzand being close to the border of Beligum is causing the app to get confused. We hope to correct this issue in a coming update to PocketEarth!
You can press and hold on any existing route point (control point or route destination) and drag to move its position on the map. If you tap on a route point its info will be shown in the info panel, then tapping the X button will remove it from the route. From the Route Detail screen, if you go to edit mode, you can also drag n’ drop destinations in the destinations list to reorder the destinations in your route.
PocketEarth v1.3 includes an updated Help Manual accessible in the Settings screen. The version on our website is out of date, but will be updated within the next couple hours. If it doesn’t clarify things, let me know here and I will do my best to explain.
An important point to understand though, is that their are now 2 different kinds of “Route Points”: Destination Points and Control Points. Control Points are created by pressing and dragging from the route line and are used for directing the routing algorithm to take certain streets. Route Destinations, on the other hand, will break the route into separate segments, each with their own driving instructions, and overview info. Route Destinations can be created in the same ways as in v1.2, and now also via the new Quick Route Menu from the main route button on the map. Finally, a Route Destination can also be created from a Control Point by tapping the route symbol on the control point’s info panel.I think what you mentioned about dragging route points has to do with a “Snap to Road” behavior we added. This behavior applies to all Control Points, and the Destination Points only when dragging from a more zoomed out view. This behavior is done in order to provide better results and less errors from the CloudMade routing service, since it fails if a point is too far from a “Routable Location”, namely a street. Consider that depending on your zoomlevel, dragging a route point just 1 pixel on the screen could represent 100s of meters to several kilometers.Let me know if you have any other questions after reading the updated help manual!Sorry about the very slow response! (We’ve been very busy finishing up a major app update which should be available any day now).
The bicycle layer is defined by data in the OpenStreetMap project in the same manner as our main map layers, and so is created and maintained by a large community of people. Anyone can contribute to help improve these maps through the OSM website, and the tools provided by them. If you have time and interest to get involved you could try to make the improvements yourself (See this Beginners Guide and this specific page about the Cycle Network Tagging), otherwise you could try to contact the part of the community involved in mapping that particular region via their wiki.Sorry for our very slow response, we have been very busy finishing up a major update to PocketEarth which should be available for download any day now. We believe this update will address the second issue you mentioned!
And about Geolocate not working, please see if this helps:The first time you try to use the GPS from PocketEarth (or any non-Apple app), it will ask you if you want to allow it to access your location. If you choose no, then PocketEarth wont be able to detect your location. You can re-enable GPS for PocketEarth in the main iPhone Settings app. On iOS 6 this is in Settings > Privacy > Location Services. On iOS 5 and earlier it is in Settings > Location Services. Scroll down the list to find PocketEarth, and then switch it ON to enable it to use the GPS again. -
