PocketEarth already offers basic Waypoint Navigation including distance/azimuth from current location. This is part of our GPS Track Recording feature, please refer to this section of our Help Manual for more information and let me know if you have further questions about the functionality.

With our new update v1.4, you can now import GPX files with waypoints in them!

That said, PocketEarth doesn’t yet automatically select the waypoints, you must manually select/switch between them.  We would like to add this enhancement in the near future.  Proximity Alert seems like a useful function as well. Thanks for the suggestions!

Thanks for the feedback!  You can also delete pins from the My Pins list by swiping over an item to uncover the delete button, or from the Edit mode on this screen.

We can add a Delete button on the Pin Detail Screen in our next release, and will consider the general point about the star icon.

This error generally indicates a network issue with the 3rd party routing service provider we use and don’t have control over this though it shouldn’t happen that often.  We have a longterm goal of offering our own offline routing engine in the app, but this will take some time.

If you are still having trouble getting routes, please try changing the Settings > Network Mode option to Offline, and then back on to either of the other options. If you continue having trouble getting routes, could you email a GPX Export of a problematic route to info@geomagik.com and I can investigate. Just tap the list icon on the Route Info Panel to get to the Detail Screen, scroll up and choose Email GPX Export option. Thanks!

Make sure you are not searching using the single field on top of the Recent Addresses list as this only searches in the Recents. You have to tap on the Search icon at the top right of the Recent Addresses window to get to the Address Form Search.

If this isn’t what is happening, please try it on our latest update (v1.4, released today), and let me know. If there is still a problem, we will be happy to look into it!

PocketEarth v1.4 update is now available for download.  While we have not yet been able to reproduce this crash, we have made a number of “safety improvements” to help prevent such crashes and hope that it will correct this one.

Please let us know if you still experience this crashing behavior on Destinations Search!  If so we will investigate it further.

Thanks for trying the latest update and I am glad to hear it worked as designed this time! It sounds like it was most likely the canceling of the updates that caused your Destinations to be marked red and not downloaded later.  We will work on making this process more clear, at minimum by giving the update size before committing to it.

Though we managed to get our map data down to about 40% the size of our competitors, which has helped enable us to offer whole country downloads, the vector data can still be quite large.  It would be really great to have “differential compression” updates so you only have to download the actual stuff that has changed, but its a bit complicated to implement, and at the moment we are swamped with other big feature requests like topographic maps, iCloud sync, and offline routing.
If you want to cache a lot of places though, I might just suggest you that you don’t do the in-app data updates as often. We try to offer frequent updates especially for our users contributing to the OSM project who like to see their changes quickly in the app, but for most people I think updating every 2-4 months is enough.
Thanks again for the detailed feedback and we hope you enjoy continued use of our product!

Thanks for reporting these missing Destinations, we will try to add them and let you know. In the mean time you can still locate them on the map, and the maps will be downloaded automatically for the views you visit. This kind of map cache will remain on your device for offline use until the next time you do an in-app data update.

I hope this information helps and sorry for the inconvenience!

Our data is divided into multiple datasets, each covering a range of scales/zoom levels. The lowest scale data covering zoom levels 0 to 6 is very small and we bundle it as part of the required data so that it is always available. This data can also be replaced by an Update, but not very often as this data doesn’t need to change much. The rest of the zoom levels (7 to 19) are covered by other datasets which is downloaded dynamically as needed to draw the current map view or as determined by the saved Destinations.

But to be clear, what you reported absolutely should not happen, and would seem to be a bug though we have been unable to reproduce it yet. All map data for all zoom levels for all your Destinations that you chose to download should be automatically re-downloaded after an update if that data was changed and deleted as a result of the Update. In that case, the green star items become yellow star (Downloading) until they are again cached on the device and turn back to green stars.

The only time a Destination should ever change from green star (Saved for Offline Use) to a red star (Not Cached) is if you use the ‘Settings > Data Cache > Map Data > Delete All Maps’ option, or if you canceled an in-progress Destinations download.

Its possible what you experienced was a bug related to the v1.3 app update rather than just the data update alone.  Do you know if you had updated from v1.2.2 or an older version?   A new map data update is again available now (we update map data about once a month), we would be interested to know if you experience this issue again, though maybe you don’t want to use the bandwidth to do another update now.

Thanks for reporting this issue, its the first we have gotten about startup time crashes and we are investigating what might have happened. Our next update v1.4 will be available soon (within next 2 weeks) and we will try to correct this issue if possible. v1.4 will include export and import options for GPX and CSV formats, though intended for general import/export needs, not as backup/restore system (you will be able to backup/restore My Pins via CSV, but for other other data, GPX is a “lossy” format).  Unfortunately a real backup/restore solution and multi device sync support will still be another month or two before its ready.

Deleting and reinstalling PocketEarth will cause loss of all favorites and data. I believe you can recover from an iTunes backup (generated automatically every time you sync), though this is device wide restore, not per app so may cause you trouble by loosing some recent data in other apps as well as in PocketEarth.
We are very sorry for the inconvenience. If you can wait for our next update v1.4, hopefully it will be able to correct the startup time crash allowing you to open the App and all your data.

Thanks for the feedback!  The place maps download/update should have started automatically although it can sometimes take up to 1 minute before starting while PocketEarth analyzes what data needs updating. If it takes longer than this and provided a network connection is available, then it may indicate a bug in the latest version. We will investigate this.

We will also try to improve the update system so that it says how much data will need to be downloaded for the update to complete. This way you will have the option to wait until a more convient time to allow it.
Note that currently our update system is all or nothing as their can be complex cross dependancies in the way our data is packaged (which helps enable our overall small sizes). If an Update is available and lists “Maps & Guides” as being updated, then generally it will mean all map data has been updated.  We would like to implement “differential updating” to allow very tiny map updates, but at the moment we have limited resources and this is more of a long term goal.

Sorry for the slow response!  The compatibility text which you quoted is generated by Apple automatically and we do not have control over it. PocketEarth provides a lot of useful functionality even on iPod Touch, but without the hardware support for GPS we cannot offer the navigation or track recording features.  If you need GPS functionality you may use an external GPS unit with your iPod Touch and PocketEarth.  Alternately, if you would like a refund for our App, you may contact Apple to request one.

Our map data comes from the OpenStreetMap project, which has excellent coverage in many locations, but less good in other places. You can check the maps on their website to check the coverage detail of an area. If there are missing street names it probably due to this fact, but fortunately this is a community project and improving every day!  If you find that PocketEarth lacks detail that is available on the OSM website, please report it and we will be happy to investigate.

We are very sorry about the crashing issue during searching, please see this forum post for more details.

Thanks for reporting this issue. It appears a small number of our users are experiencing this issue running the latest version of PocketEarth on iOS 6, but we have so far been unable to reproduce or identify the problem.  Though we are investigating this issue and hope to have it corrected soon. Sorry for any inconvenience!

Please note that for the meantime, you should still be able to locate places on the map, and tap on them to see their Info Panel. You can tap the Star on the place’s Info Panel to add it to the My Destinations list so you can quickly re-find it later, and to be given the option to download the maps for that place.
You may also try rebooting the device or reinstalling the app (if you don’t mind loosing your favorites and saved data).
Thanks again for reporting this and for your patience while we correct it!

    noahv,

There are no GPS related issues that we are aware of in the latest version of PocketEarth (v1.3).  The grey button in PocketEarth indicates that it has not yet established your location.  Note that the iPhone uses AGPS technology meaning that the GPS is Assisted by the WiFi and/or Cellular signal to more quickly identify your location. If both WiFi and Cellular are disabled or unavailable, it generally take 30-40 seconds to get an initial GPS location fix, and in worse cases up to 2 minutes. This is a limitation of the hardware and PocketEarth should be behaving in the same manner as other map and GPS apps in this regard. In some cases, it is unable to get a location fix at all, but these should be relatively rare and usually due to a block in the line of sight to the GPS satellites. Let us know if you experience suggests otherwise and we will investigate for potential bugs in our app. Thanks!

To save routes, pins, favorite places and POIs, just tap the Favorite (star-) button on the Info Panel. Items can be removed by unstaring the item, swipe to delete, or via edit mode.
