Thanks for the feedback! For the moment, we have pretty limited resources, and are not able to focus on OSM Editing too much, though we would like to in the future, and may even offer a dedicated OSM editing app later on.

For now the best option is to export the GPX to email or iTunes, and then upload it via the OSM website, or open directly on your computer using JOSM for example.

Thanks for the feedback! We have gotten this request a few times already, and we will try to offer a better “info” experience in one of our coming updates.  Our next update v1.5, however, is already past the “feature complete” milestone, and so won’t include this yet.

Note that when in Navigation or GPS Track Recording modes the Speed, Altitude, and Direction Info is shown in a much larger font.

The current version of PocketEarth only prevents screen dimming when in the Navigation Mode (make a route, enable GPS, press the “Play” button).  Our next app update, v1.5, will include a setting to prevent screen dimming all of the time, or just any time the GPS is active. Thanks for the feedback!

    Hi Scott,

You are right, PocketEarth did loose support for upside-down orientation recently due to Apple changing the way this works with iOS 6. Currently we still support iOS 4.3, and fixing it is a bit of work. Our next release, PocketEarth v1.5, will be our last update that supports iOS 4.3. After this, we will support only iOS 5.0 and later, and will be able to fix this issue with upside-down orientation more easily. So in short, yes we plan to re-add support for this, but it is two updates away, which means its likely a few months out. Sorry for the inconvenience, I will discuss it further with my team and see if there is anything we can do sooner!

    Best Regards

Thanks for your feedback!  We have had a few requests for Voice Navigation, and would like to implement it, however, we do not at the moment have the resources to do this. We will let you know when this situation changes and we are able to give a specific timeline for this feature.

PocketEarth relies on a 3rd party online routing service which unfortunately does not give us other routing options that we can present in our app.  Our next update however will add a Shortest Driving route mode which can be helpful for getting a second alternate route, which is often a good “scenic” option.

Note however, that you can customize the route offered by pressing anywhere on the route line until a “control point pin” appears, and then drag it to a road you would like to pass through and the route will be recalculated using it. You can make as many of these as you like in order to control the routing.

    Hi dsloper,

Thanks for the feedback!  We will be happy to add support for the standard “Open In…” functionality when exporting GPX from PocketEarth. If you have the Dropbox App, it will allow you to save the file to it.

Thanks for letting us know about this issue! After doing some research, it appears that the GPS and maps are not aligned in *some* towns in China due to intentional skewing. GPS devices made in China for domestic use there apparently “un-skew” the GPS location fixes thus placing it correctly on the map.

I will discuss this issue with my team and try to work-around it with an offset setting or in some other way.

In general, any external GPS unit that is compatible with the iPhone/iPad should work well with PocketEarth and other mapping and GPS apps. A couple of our users have verified that the Dual XGPS150 device specifically does work well with PocketEarth, so I am not sure exactly what the problem is here.

A grey GPS button in PocketEarth indicates that the GPS signal has been lost or was never acquired. Please make sure PocketEarth is authorized to use GPS Location data in the main Settings app > Privacy > Location Services > Find PocketEarth in the list and switch it ON.  If it is already on, then I’d recommend you force close PocketEarth and reboot your iPad. Let me know if you need info about how to do this.

A few other notes about GPS:
    • Airplane mode prevents the GPS from functioning at all. See this post for more information.
    • WiFi/3G is not needed for the GPS to function. However, be sure to download the maps you need in advance.
    • Many consumer grade GPS units do not function at very high altitudes.
Let me know if this info helps, or if you have additional details that might help us to resolve this issue.

    Hi Grey,

I am sorry to hear you feel cheated!  You can request a refund from Apple if you like.

I understand your frustration with the lack of proper Japanese support, we are working hard to resolve this as soon as possible.
Map downloads absolutely should not be that slow – I am bit confused as you say you have a fast connection!  We have carefully selected some of the fastest and most reliable, internationally located data servers possible to serve our data. For example, from a pretty slow connection where I am now in Thailand, I am able to download all of Japan in less than 20 minutes. From the US or Europe it should be much faster than this.  Where are you located?  Could you verify your connection speed in general using a service such as this one: http://www.mobilespeedtest.com  Maybe with this info, we can figure out why its taking so long.

    Hi Markus,

Our next update, v1.5, which should be available in the next few weeks, will offer an easy way to select and delete all items.  It will also offer Groups (folders) so you can easily organize your pins and other content by destination, and browse or search within a single Group. It will include a new Edit mode which will allow you to select multiple items in one go, and then move them into a group, or delete them all at once. There will be a Select All button for convenience.
Until then, you may be interested to know that with the current version you can search the My Pins and My Listings tabs by entering a city name.  For example, if you type “paris” into the search on My Pins, it will show you all pins located in Paris.  On the My Listings tab, you may also search by POI type, for example by typing “Cafe”, etc.

    Hi MrFerdinand,

Sorry for the slow response!  This issue has been verified as being fixed by a number of our users with the v1.4 update.  However,  our lite app is still stuck at v1.3 so it is still possible to run into this problem.  We plan on releasing our next update v1.5 in the next few weeks for both our full and lite apps. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Sorry for the very slow response and very sorry to hear that this is happening!  We are not sure what exactly is happening, we haven’t had any other reports of this.  Let us know if you still have this issue, or managed to work around it some way!

Our next app update will include a feature to detect crashes, and will automatically backup your pins, and other favorites data, so that if you have to re-install the app, you can recover your data exactly. We hope to have this update available in the next few weeks.
For now you could try the Settings > Export feature. CSV export works best for pins, GPX for routes/tracks, though GPX is a less rich format than what PocketEarth uses internally, so re-importing GPX files will loose some details. Doing a GPX export of each track/route individually will re-import better than the single Settings > Export > GPX option.

There is no limit on the length of the notes field, and it may include phone numbers and website URLs (starting with http:// for example) which become clickable links within PocketEarth. The notes text is treated as “plain text”, and thus should not contain html nor any other rich formatting or images.

Notes appear in PocketEarth only on the Pin Detail screen in the scrolling Notes text area.  The search field on the My Pins list searches in the notes field too, even though the notes do not appear directly in this view.

Your right, we have been lagging at publishing such information.  You can try the CSV Export function for an example of our CSV format.

Basically the first row of the file is a header line describing the columns/fields. They are matched by name and so should appear exactly as in the Export, however they may be in any order, and most are optional. The only required field is one called “Location” which accepts any common coordinate string (See the Coordinates section of our Help Manual for specific coordinate formats and examples). Alternately, you can provide 2 fields “Lat” & “Long” instead of the one “Location” field for giving separated latlon coordinates.

All other fields are technically optional and may be omitted:  “Name”, “Notes”, “Icon”, “Color”, “Address”. “Name” and “Notes” should be pretty obvious. “Address” is the street address. If not provided the address will be reverse-geocoded by PocketEarth automatically next time you are online. “Color” should be a 6 letter HTML color code (such as FF0000 for red) and “Icon” is an identifier for the pin icon. Available values for the “Icon” field are:  marker-pin,  marker-pin-small, marker-pin-flag, marker-pin-home, marker-pin-contact, marker-pin-camera, marker-pin-sleep,  marker-pin-food, marker-pin-footprint, marker-pin-star.  These can be omitted and the usual pin defaults will be used.

PocketEarth supports standard ASCII and UTF-8 encoded, “comma delimited, quote padded” CSV files.  Some versions of Excel have a problem with this format when used with international accented letters in it. We recommend using one of the latest versions of Excel, or better yet OpenOffice, or a simpler CSV or Text editor.

Be careful when importing data. If you import a CSV file twice, you will have duplicates of the items in My Pins! Similarly if you do a CSV Export, then Import it again, you will find all of your pins have been duplicated and could be annoying to delete all of the duplicates.  Our next update PocketEarth v1.5 will have the option to import a file into its own group directly, so it can be more easily managed, and easily deleted if imported twice.
